A short question for T-Mo reps.....

I've seen the term "Smart Access" used around this forum quite a bit. What exactly is that?

I'm a rep for another wireless carrier, so I'mnot as familiar with all of T-Mobile's services as some of you.

Is SA a type of prepaid service, or some sort of account-management service?

I'm just trying to educate myself so i can better understand these forums.

Its a type of acct for people that dont have any credit. we set them up with an acct but it has a spending limit of 150.00 once the bal reaches 150.00 it will be suspended till they can make a payment or atleast bring the bal below 100.00

Smartaccess also limits the customer to which rate plans they can choose. Any plan that starts higher than $49.99 they cannot have. You also can't have more than one line on the account, so a shared plan isn't possible. All in all, it is a great opportunity for those who are credit-ly challenged to get a phone that isn't pre-paid or with a deposit 🙂

...and after 12 months, if the smartaccess customer has a good payment history, and would like to not have the smartaccess "restrictions", then we can convert to a "regular" account, they're automatically approved for a second line with $0 deposit, no more spending limit balance, and no more restrictions on pricing plans either...

The program is a wonderful program actually, it helps people manage not to get high bills, be responsible for their usage, and be rewarded for doing well. (as in-it's not designed to be a permanent program)

You can add some data capabilities. The only restriction is that the monthly bill cannot exceed $50 with plans. Examples are the $46 monthly service and Unlimited Sidekick usage. You can have the $46 plan and mobile-to-mobile or add-ons like that totalling over $50, but not SOC's that would normally require Service Agreements on their own.

(SOC's= features...just fyi)

davesr is right though, you cannot exceed $50/mo in features that are service dependent, etc...You can have a $45.99 smartaccess plan, and add on mobile-mobile, text, callertunes, t-zones etc....and go over $50/mo...but for example the sidekick feature is $20/month. Because the sidekick operates off of a propriotary server, in order to use it and everything it does you have to have that added to your account. 35.99+20.00= not on smartaccess. ☚ī¸

In this case (just as example) you have 3 choices:
1) Switch to $29.99 voice plan, add $20 sidekick feature

2) have sidekick exclusive plan which is $29.99, unlimited everything except voice minutes; pay as you go $0.20/min

3) Use your sidekick device as a...

if I went with a sidekick 2, would I be able to use the sim card and the corresponding data plan in another phone? or would the phone service and data service not work correctly on another phone? I mean using both the sk2 and the other phone, just switching back and fourth

Actually, being a Smart Access customer myself. I called up T-Mobile the other day requesting a high priced plan and they told me that even after 6 months you can retry for a reular account. If you get denied then you get denied but if you get approved then you have to extend your contract. Just FYI.

Unfortunately, you were misinformed. Smart Access is a required account type for 12 full months. It is after that time that we look at the 6 months up to that date to determine if qualifications have been met to convert to regular postpay. There are no exceptions. Sorry for the confusion.

that is absolutely correct, but let me just add to that a bit of clarification.

What we look at when we convert a smartaccess account to a regular account:
Is the account active?
Is the account delinquent?
Has the account had 12 or more months of tenure?
And finally, this is the confusing one...IF the above criteria is met, from the date that you are requesting the conversion, we have to review the las...
