if i unlock the 3g version would i be able to use it on t-mobiles 3g network?

To my understanding you can not because the frequencies are different.

thats what i thought. is there a way to hack the freq settings on the iphone?

Not that I know of. And even if there is I'd be a little skeptical about it.

The frequencies are generally hardwired into the phone, so you wouldn't be able to hack it.

No. The only 3G frequencies the iPhone 3G can pick up are the 850/1900/2100 MHz ones. The T-Mobile 3G network is in the 1700 MHz frequency. It is the actual chip in the phone that makes the phone pick up those signals. You would have to tear the phone apart and take out the chip and input a T-Mobile 3G 1700 MHz chip.
