Hotspot@home VS Femtocell

T-Monster

Dec 24, 2008, 8:54 AM
So i've read that at&t and verizon are looking into Femtocell technology, and Sprint's Airave is already on the market. I know t-mobile's hotspot@home is great and makes crystal clear connections, but why wouldn't t-mobile have looked into this first? or at least in conjunction with hs@h? This way anyone can get t-mobile for their house, whether they have a UMA compatible phone or not? Guaranteed it would generate a lot more sales and interest.

Femtocell can be universal (no special phone hardware required)
but @Home can be used overseas because it utilizing wifi and broadband
Femtocell may be illegal to use overseas because 1900 may interfere 3G operation (WCDMA I uses 1900 for out stream, 850 may interfere 900 operation)

Not sure what's meant by that statement? But I do remember reading somewhere (maybe even this website). That if you were to take a TMO Hotspot@home router from the US and plug it into the Internet in the UK it wouldn't work for phone calls due to differences that were above my head.
But I assume if TMO offers Hotspot@home in other countries and it were bought there it'd work.
But I think it's just a US thing due to TMO's spotty coverage here.

to my knowledge, the femtocells or airraves use some type of gps, probably data from the internet to get location info, i have read the vzw/sprint ones will not work over seas, but there will always be a hack of some sort. they say they only cover like a 2500 sq ft house.

I don't think it's anything like GPS. More like an IP address.
