If I bring my own phone...
let's say I get a G1 or BB8220 on an auction site. I have a [dreadful] W490 with the $4.99 text msg pkg. If I move my sim to the new G1 or BB, will texting continue to work on the $4.99 pkg w/o getting the $25 data pkg? Also, will I be able to surf the web via wi-fi w/o data pkg? Thanx-

No for the g1, yes for the 8220. blackberries do not require any sort of data on t-mobile. The g1, on the other hand, cannot start up without syncing to a g-mail account. Also, once the IMEI registers with t-mobile and they see you have a g1 with no g1 data plan, they will add it onto your account automatically. Like the iphone, the g1 requires internet.

The G1 feature will not be added automatically. Everything else he said is true though.

You should actually be able to do this with the G1 as well. You can get only data added on to your plan for a few days to get the phone activated. Once the phone is activated, you can "jailbreak" the phone and use the phone without the data service. 2) Call T-Mobile to put the $25 data package with no text on your account (keep your $4.99 text package on the account).
3) Activate your G1.
4) "Jailbreak" your G1 to give you root access to the device.
5) Call T-Mobile and ask them to remove your G1 data service.
The phone should work f...

P.s. Any Rep in their right mind will not add 24.99 data package without removing the 4.99 feature. If they do this not only (if they are getting listened too) fail the call but also be the most retardedess rep ever.
...
If the customer specifically says that's the way that they want it, then the rep should do that. If they don't, they're not a very good rep.

Thanks, everyone. I'll pass on the jailbreak for now. Looks like the Nokia 5580 will do everything we want. Told the wife she must have wi-fi in case she ever feels the need to surf. I just want good music while biking. Now, if they would jsut sell the darn things.....
