Can I get on WIFI in a wireless area, or check google email WITHOUT getting data plan on WIFI phone?
I'm wanting to upgrade my phone but mainly so that I can check my google, yahoo, etc.. e-mail and be on the internet in a wireless area, but I don't want to get the data plan. I would be happy just being able to surf the web on the phone at home where I have wireless. I have been told 50 different things by different reps and I need a solid answer before I decide to get a phone or not. I'm mainly looking at the Blackberry 8900, the Blackberry Pearl flip, and the Samsung Behold. Any thoughts? Thanks.

First off the Behold doesn't have wifi so you would not be able to use that phone. As for the Blackberries I don't think you would be able to get mail but you could surf the web. Because blackberries use their servers to transfer the email and if your not paying for it you can't access it. I guess you could use the browser to access web mail.

What about the G1.. can I surf the internet in a WIFI area if I don't have the data plan?

No. The G1 will not even pass the first screen without having the data package. (You need to sign into Gmail) You're best bet is a Windows Mobile Phone, i.e. Shadow, Dash, Wing (Garbage). My old roomate had the first Shadow without data and could access the internet at home on our Wireless Network. Now, I haven't tried this on any of the other devices or my own (I have the data package) but I'm pretty sure it would work.
Now, you may or may not be able to get your e-mail, but the bst bet would be to go to gmail.com through the browser while you are connected.
Hope this helps.
In short, you're best option is probably a Windows Mobile Phone.

He's right.
G1 - requires the data package to sign into the phone the first time. Technically, I've seen people who get the G1 and add the data package, log into gmail through the G1, then take the data package off. You'll be able to use the G1, and browse the internet through WiFi, but you'll keep getting a connection error message because it won't be able to connect to the network when you're not on WiFi. I wouldn't recommend this route since the G1 is designed to use the internet, so you'll be defeating the purpose of the phone.
Behold / Memoir - no WiFi
BlackBerries - you won't be able to get push e-mail since they do go through the servers. You'll be able to hop on WiFi and through the browswer, log into your Gmail and Yahoo, b...
