External v. Internal Antenna Reception

Anyone have an ideas on whether the external 'stub' antenna gets better reception that an internal one on the T-Mobile network. With advances in technology, does an internal antenna hold a signal just as well?

Well some people will tell you that it's no difference. And it isnt if your in an area with good or excellent coverage and reception. But if you use your phone in a spotty area, you may want to consider a phone with an external antenna. Or if you use your phone in big buildings, you will have a less chance of break ups or dropping calls with a phone with an external antenna than an internal. One reason stub antennas get better reception than internal antennas is because your hand, hair, or other object may block signals from your phone because of the phone's size. But kepp in mind that reception can also depends on phone itself. Some phones get better reception that other, no matter there external or internal antennas. But usually external a...

Actually, the reason verizon has phones with only external antennas is because of the frequency it operates on. The higher the frequency, the shorter the optimal antenna length is.

It's both frequency as well as the CDMA technology.

I have used a number of phones with internal and external antenna on T-Mobile's network in great coverage areas and in spotty areas. I found no diffrence between the two, but I guess it depends on what phone you have and where in T-Mobile's coverage you are using it. I guess it's better to test out the phone then return it if you don't like it.

Like I said it depends on the phone you use. Test have supported that external anttenas are better than internal. And it's not just VZ, it's every company. Especially if its a small phone. Most people cant tell the difference because most people use them in great reception areas. But I've been inside buildings with people with the same companies (tmobile). I have my phone with external antenna and someone eles has one without one. His phone cant get through (and if he's lucky it wont last long) my phone gets through all the time and usely last a while. I myself have many different tmobile phones with external and internal antennas. I know for sure it's a difference. But remember i said it also depends on the phone you got. You have some inte...

That confirms what I thought. I have just bought a Nokia 6170 which holds a signal very well (internal and small - maybe technology is progressing) - the motorolas I have used (V300 & 600) with stub antennas do not seem to do so well. The samsungs (e105) that the kids have seem ok. Other Nokia's I have used (6230, 3120, 6110.......) were excellent. Motorolas do seem to have problems but some say they will transfer from tower to tower better than any other because of their refresh rate.
