Purchasing an unlocked phone

First point of info- I am not a T-Mobile customer.

If I walked into a nearby T-Mo corporate store and was willing to pay full retail price, could i purchase an Motorola a630 unlocked?

If so, how much would that be?

If not, is there a way for a non-customer to get this phone unlocked direct from T-Mo (not Ebay or a third-party authorized dealer)?

T-Mobile stores do not carry unlocked phones. You may purchase them from:
A) Some indirect dealers
B) Ebay
C) Motorola
D) Someone you know if they have an unlocked A630

Why would you want to get an unlocked phone from T-Mobile if you're not a customer?

No need to be sarcastic. Let me be more specific. Why is he so INSISTENT on getting it DIRECTLY from T-Mobile? He specified, for some reason that he did not want to do it through ebay or an indirect dealer.

I specified that mainly because I trust T-Mobile more than most of the authorized dealers. I just wanted to make sure I'm gettting all the right answers.

Then I would recommend purchasing an unlocked phone directly from Motorola. Unfortunately, all the phones that T-Mobile corp stores sell are locked.

can I get that from Motorola?

I've looked into purchasing from Motorola.com, but that looked like the phone would ship out locked to T-Mobile. Was I reading that wrong, or is there a way to get an unlocked/unbranded one direct from Motorola?

(And, yes, I am aware that not all the features will necessarily work without changing some of the firmware settings, and that I won't have access to and of the 850 mHz spectrum towers.)

Good question. When I went to the motorola website, looks like they only sell branded. As a matter of fact, I have seen newer phones for sale at varying websites, that motorola doesn't have on their website.

A word of caution to you my friend. ANY unlocked A630 you by from T-Mobile, Ebay, or anyone will NOT be able to function fully on Cingular or any other GSM service prvider.

Most GSM phone you can unlock AND edit the current MMS and WAP settings, or just create new profiles. T-Mobile has locked this featre out. So there for you can't input your carriers settings and use this phone to it's fullest ability. You will ONLY be able to use this phone as a phone and to send SMS...you WILL NOT be able to use the WAP browser or send MMS period.

The only A630 tha you will find that you can do that with was the pre released version. You can tell it's the pre-relesed version by the letters "VIP" on the front below the keypad where the T-Moble logo ...

Is there no way to "Flex" the phone to enable the feature? I would think there is. I don't know for sure though. I would check howardforums.

ahhhhh...you are alomst right... see you can "flash and flex it"... it's like flashing a v300 to v600 firmware, just no bluetooth. But that is assuming you can get the v600 firmware to flash it with. How are you going to get firmware that doesn't exist? This is just a theory. I know very little about flashing/flexing, but it makes sense...no?

Whats the point of flash/flexing? Doesn't that void your warranty?

I am one that doesn't worry about voiding the warranty. I take excellent care of my phones(not a scratch or scuff), and I understand the risk I take when doing things of this nature. I'm curious now, going to check out howardforums and see if it is possible.

I saw an A630 the other day - and I think the guy had done that. It allowed him to manually select 850 mhz. I thought it was really cool at first (he was trying to sell them), but then I realized that setting up the phone to give the option of selecting 850 could be a very different thing than actually calibrating the radio to work for that bandwidth. I don't know much about flashing & flexing though - but it just seemed too good to be true.
