I may be the last person on the Eastern seaboard not to have a cell yet...finally looking at emergency-only prepaid plans. "betterthanjake" talked me out of Virgin in favor of T-Mobile to Go's plan...any other recommendations out there?
I'll only be using it while traveling in L.A., San Diego, suburbs of Chicago and Milwaukee; also Montreal, and occasionally in NYC where I live. How's T-Mobile's coverage? Many thanks, all...

Coverage is good, you can look at the map online to see (although I'm not sure about Canada). They also just changed pricing so you get more minutes for the same price.

The coverage is good in all the areas you listed except Montreal. The T-Mobile To Go does not allow international roaming....even to Canada.
The product is ideal for your situation. You can buy the Nokia 3595 for 39.99 after mail in rebate, add on one $100 airtime card and have 1060 minutes to use on the Nationwide Network that are good for a year! That's only 11.67/month! You get the Free Roaming and Long Distance on all your minutes. Voicemai, Caller ID, Call Waiting, and Conference Calling are all included. Incoming texts are free (outgoing are .10/message) and Internet on the phone is free. No contract, no extra cards to buy...you are good for one year.
