MyTouch 4g HSPA+ Question
Hey all-
Quick question I'm hoping to have answered, went to 2 T-Mobile stores and still not certain, also tried Google. I have the MyTouch 4G on an EM+ Plan, 500 mins, $59.99, my location is downtown Chicago. In my "about phone" settings, the network type used to indicate "HSPA+." I had a sim card issue with wifi calling and was sent an OTA update from tech support.
Ever since, the network type always indicates either "HSDPA" or "UMTS" and never "HSPA+." The store reps have told me that although the phone displays HSDPA/UMTS, it is still running at the "4g" speed / HSPA+ and that the network does it automatically if I am in a 4g area, which I obviously am.
This just doesn't make sense to me, am I missing something? The Samsung Tab o...

Well first of all there is no $10 add-on for 4g web. If your phone is a 4g device in a 4g area it automatically connects to the 4g network as long as you are within range of a 4g tower. Do a speed test and see what your connection speed is there is an app called speed test from speedtest.net . There is a huge HUGE difference between 3g speeds and 4g speeds. If it comes down to it that for some reason it is using a 3g tower only call tech support and see whats going on. They are the experts

To clarify a bit, the EM+ plan I have is unlimited text and data. I did a test on speedtest.net and I am getting 2.85Mb/s down and .85 up. This was just now, 8:15 PM in Chicago, my phone displays "H" at the top and was running on HSPDA. I will call tech support to see if they can shed light. Thanks!

Well if its displaying "H" that means 4G and if your getting 2.85 down thats 4g it is probably faster you were just on during a peak time more than likely. I can say with 99.99% guarantee that you are accessing the HSPA+.

hspa+ is 3.5G... HSDPA is 4g.. eventhough you are on a location with a 4g tower, its normal to get hspa+ or even just 3g coz it depends on were u are specifically located or if u are moving or not. buildings or walls could be barriers to signal, so it doesnt mean that because you are on a location with a 4g tower, u will be consistently connected to 4g already.. for the EM 10.00 4g web, u dont have to pay for that.. u can just call in and request for it to be changed to 4g web if you already have the unlimited talk text and web bundle..

Umm, wrong. HSDPA is just the "download" stream of any HSPA/HSPA+ connection. Its partner would be HSUPA, the "upstream" connection. HSPA+ is 4G according to the ITU, but there are many upgrades. T-Mobile starting using HSPA+ at 21Mbps and are doubling it this year to 42Mbps this year. Future updates are going to push its theoretical speeds up to 500+Mbps. So yes, very much 4G. The ITU changed its definition of 4G when they realized no current technologies are going to meet 1Tbps down for a very, very long time, and that HSPA+ is every bit as competitive as WiMax or LTE.

You may need to do more research. Theoretical Speed do not equal real world tmobile's advertised speed are unrealistic and cannot compete with Wimax or Lte. True 4g solutions trump hspa+ any day of the week. Hspa+ is a band-aid not a permanent solution for high Speed data. 😎
