EDGE in California

I just got a Motorola V635 and it shows when the connection is EDGE. At home (N. Calif) I have such a connection and the browser is very fast. I have travelled to S. Calif. where I also received an EDGE signal in most places.
For those interested in buying an unlocked phone, the V635 is great: screen, camera, battery life....all superior to any Moto I've ever used.

EDGE is already in California cause the Towers that T-Mobile are using are the old Cingular towers that T-Mobile got when they purchased them from Cingular since Cingular merged with AT&T. But the whole US, is not EDGE ready for customers to use.

I wish we had EDGE here in NYC. You are using the old Cingular towers that T-Mobile bought from them due to Cingular merging with AT&T Wireless.

Yes . . . believe it or not, T-Mobile is now offering EDGE in Moses Lake, Washington. I have no idea of why they chose that instead of Seattle or Vancouver or Spokane. I guess it was probably a good test market, since they have a very limited subscriber base in that area and the outages that the transition caused didn't result in TOO many complaints.

So as you're cruising along past the wheat fields in rural Washinton, you can now enjoy high speed internet on your mobile device's browser . . .

Wheat? I always envisioned giant firs. Huh. Here's to "undercover" EDGE. ;)

I don't know if it's official or not. We were told that they would be rolling out edge throughout our entire market here in Washington over the next few months. They started with the areas around Moses Lake in central Washington to test for any potential problems in upgrading the towers. It is *supposedly* up and running - I haven't actually gone out there to test it, but I've had a couple of people tell me that it is working there.

Relax, Terry. No sense in losing your mind over something that won't be in effect nationwide or official for a while.

It'll be in the 100-200 kbps range, Terry. And pricing has yet to be determined. It'll be a little while, yet.

Exactly - everyone always advertises the 384 kps speed for EDGE, but that's the current record speed for some of the networks in Europe. The speed here is much slower. I heard that it's about 2-3 times as fast as the GPRS connections in that area were. They use a lot of repeaters in central Washington, so there's more chance for the signal to degrade.

Also, the other thing that no one seems to have remembered yet . . . you have to have an EDGE capable phone. So unless you...
