A quick question about unlocked phones w/ Tmobile
Question: I've heard if he puts his sim card in the unlocked phone, voice services will be fine, but data (texts, specifically) won't work... is this true?
What are the downsides to using an unlocked phone? I understand that they won't be able to be serviced by T-Mobile, I'm more interested in functionality issues.

Not necessarily. T-Mobile simply pushing the settings thru DOTAC (Device Over The Air Configurator) will not resolve all problems. You may still experience issues because of the device not being sold by them.
While this is true, it's not so much because we don't just sell it. Any unlocked device not previously branded by T-Mobile, or any carrier for that matter has not been through the testing, fielding, appicable software updates etc...before our engineers officially approve it for use on our network.
