i have been a tmobile customer for years now, but this is the first time i'm thinking about upgrading while under a family plan. if i upgrade and sign-up for another 12 months, how does that effect the other person on the plan? she's interested in taking my current phone, but i don't want her to lose out on having the option of upgrading to a new phone on a discount if that's what she would prefer.

You don't say what kind of upgrade you're thinking of doing. Are you upgrading your phone(s) or going to a different family plan or are you splitting it up and not making it a family plan any longer and using separate plans for each member? If you remain on a family plan if you upgrade the pla...

That is only half correct. Upgrading the actual rate plan on a family plan will extend the contract on all the lines for one year. Uprading your phone without changing plans will only extend the contract for that line of service. Regardless, neither option will prevent the second person on your plan from taking advantage of the full upgrade discount when she chooses to do so. Contracts and handset upgrade tenure can be and often are on different schedules, even though when you first sign up they are on the same timeline. If it has been more than eleven months since your last full handset discount, and you have been on a qualifying rate plan for the entire time, then you qualify for full discount, including rebates, regardless of your co...

also, regardless of weather or not a line is on contract, the other person's, for example...if they want to change their plan, or do a change of responsibility, they can still do so at any time. The only thing a service agerement does is ask you to stay with the provider and have active service with them for the period agreed to (12 months). Changes can always be made.

I want to upgrade my phone. I was added to her plan maybe 7 or 8 months ago. But I was told by several people that once we started a plan together I would probably lose any prior discounts I might have earned. The plan will stay the same, and of course I realize if I changed that plan it would affect the other person. I'm just concerned how handset upgrades work. Like if I want to get a new phone, and so does she will we have to do it at the same time? Or can only one of us get a deal?
