T-Mobile EDGE questions

I just got a phone that has EDGE capability. I have read in a bunch of places that EDGE should have been rolled out to the entire United States for T-Mobile by September 1st. How can you tell if it is using EDGE or not? Are there any settings that need to be made in a phone to make it use EDGE, or do the regular GPRS settings make it use EDGE?

Tmobile has disabled the EDGE indicator on all of their handsets. The only way to know would be to run a speed test or call 611 and ask if EDGE is active in your zip code. There are considerably more than 6 markets with EDGE.

What!!!!! Tmobile had on there website I believe 90% of there network will be edge captible. I think its 90%. I know majority of their network has edge. Only a very few places doesnt have edge. Most likely you are in an edge market.

I was wondering about EDGE too, so I emailed T-Mo CS. In reply they said EDGE is currently active and they listed 54 markets where it is active. Those are pretty much all major populated areas. Also, they confirmed that 3 devices support EDGE (3220, 6101, V330). From this I understand that if you have one of those phones, you most likely get EDGE right now.

What I don't understand is why there is no mention of EDGE anywhere on T-Mo website under Services and Features, for example. One explanation could be that 95% of their customers don't even get t-zones, so it's a waste of money trying to explain to them that the data service has just been upgraded from GPRS to EDGE. Or, T-Mobile considers this a technical issue that has no marketing va...

It turns out, after further review, I am getting EDGE speeds on my GPRS connection. I am using a Nokia 6620 (unlocked EDGE phone from Cingular), and using the DSLreports for mobile speed test, I am getting about 90kbps speeds. There realy isn't any indicator on the phone that you are using EDGE, but those are EDGE speeds.

Here is the mobile speed test:

I called and asked a T-Mobile rep about it, and she didn't even know what EDGE was or any rollout plans. But it looks like it is working the Chicagoland area and northwest Indiana.

And I got this google maps application to work on my phone with the EDGE connection, and it works pretty damn well. You do have to set up the proxy within the application though.

So like only 5% of the customer base is data users?

I didn't say that was the case. I only speculated about possible reasons T-Mobile did not bother to officially anounce the availability of EDGE.

T-Mobile EDGE is done in all major markets, however the reason why you have not heard an official release of this technology is because it is not being used anywhere yet. you will know when you are using it, as long as you have an EDGE compatible phone. It will most likely be a symbol like the capital G for GPRS at the top of your screen
