Stupid question: what happens when I miss a call?

Hello all,
I am not an avid cell phone user, so my question may seem stupid.
What happens when I travel outside of the service area and someone tries to call me? Am I supposed to get a "missed call" message on my phone when it sees the network again? Well, I don't. So I have no way to know if anybody called unless they bother to leave a voice message.
I don't think that's normal, is it?

This is normal, and is how all cell networks work. You will only get a voicemail, not the missed call message. The missed calls are kept track of on your phone, not the cellular network.
