Wireless Week

When the FCC auctions off spectrum this summer, one of the companies standing in line to write a check will be T-Mobile USA, which sees the spectrum as its key to the future.

The FCC auction involves spectrum in the 1710-1755 MHz bands, paired with 2110-2155 MHz. Analysts estimate the auction will generate between $10 billion and $15 billion.

Neville Ray, senior vice president of T-Mobile USA's engineering operations, said in an interview with Wireless Week that the nation's fourth-largest carrier is excited to get into the bidding. "We will be an active participant in that auction," Ray says, "and we intend to bolster the spectrum holdings we have. We hope it is realistic pricing."

They already did. They raised text messaging prices and T-Mobile internet prices.

I don't know if I totally agree with you there.

T-Mobile has built its business on giving the best rate plans overall. However, many of the users on TMobile right now are looking at Cingular, Sprint and Verizon and saying "why can't we have that" thanks to the broadband capabilities of those networks. We've always been a year or more behind on new technology coming out and that has hurt us. (I'm using we as the Tmobile family of corporate and consumers.)

This expense needs to happen in my opinion or by the time we do get those 3G capabilities we'll be so far behind the other carriers that it may be too little too late. And if that means my plan goes up a few dollars I'm okay with that.

However, I think the increased capabilities wil...

I think for tmobile to make the expendetures worth their while they are going to have to attract more corporate accounts. Sure there are a lot of average consumers that use the data features, I myself on talk 200 minutes a month but user over a gig of data on my cell phone, but I dont think there are enough of us to make money off of. With Cingular changing their name back to at&t wireless I just think it will be very difficult for tmobile to get those corporate customers and can only see rate plans for consumers going up to pay for the new expenses. Not that rate plans or cost of any consumable goods dont naturally inflate anyways.

I agree with you that the corporate accounts need to go up, but what I'm seeing in the world of corporate America is that less and less companies are picking up cell phone service (with the exception of BlackBerry and similar services). What I'm seeing more and more of is that companies are picking up a portion or all of the individuals cell phone bills instead. Don't get me wrong, corporate accounts are important, but there's a lot more picture and video messaging than ever before, more data access, more mobile entrepreneurs like myself and more teenagers doing more bandwidth intensive stuff with their cells than ever before and those numbers are just going to keep going up.
(I know I left a lot out, but I ran out of air. 😁 )

I recently worked for cingular in sales. Their data prices are kinda prohibitive and I definately did not have as many users of the data service as I would have liked. For the most part is seemed that everyone who needed a cell phone allready has one, most of my new customers were people who just wanted a phone for "just in case." Tmobile isnt goin to outclass cingular's network (voice/data) any time soon so I do hope the keep their pricing as their competitive advantage, but I just dont see it happening with the amount of $$$ they are about to spend.
