i'm currently a verizon wireless customer and i'm going to college in august in laramie, wyoming...my question is, i know that t-mobile has service available in cheyenne, wy which is about two hours from laramie, if i were to get a t-mobile phone in cheyenne, get a cheyenne number and then use the phone in laramie would that be a violation of the contract? i know that t-mobile has no roaming fees and stuff like that, but since they don't have native coverage in laramie would it be possible to continue my service there? i'm really not a fan of verizon and t-mobile is alot cheaper for a soon-to-be poor college student, any thoughts?

you can pretty much get an area code from anywhere in wy, but the issue comes down to coverage, you can check the coverage at t-mobile.com on the bottom, its called a personal coverage check, or you can go into your loco tmobile corp store and do it, good luck

alright i check it out, thanks!

why arent you a fan of verizon?
...
well...i like verizon for the most part, my main problems are the lack of an unlimited text messaging plan (besides the "in" messaging bundle) the inability to use non-verizon branded phones on their network (although i understand why they do it i don't like it), the overpriced plans, their bluetooth limitations, that boring ui (yes i know its been stated time and again about it so i won't go into it), and ok this is lame, but i don't like the phones they offer, i don't hate verizon or anything like that, i've been satisfied with my service and most of my dislikes are trivial. i'm very curious about other carries but all we have in the part of wyoming is alltel and verizon and this really small gsm carrier called union wireless. i want to ...

vzw has an unlimited messaging plan, its free on employee plans, anyways that doesnt help closest we have is unl in/2500 which really should be sufficient if you really need to use more then 2500 messages a month to non vzw customers then you are not with the right carrier, or your friends arent. get them to come to vzw and then you have unlimited for just 10 bucks, all on the nations most reliable wireless network.
I think you should stay with verizon personally, we have new phones coming out and changes are being discussed/are planned to come out on handsets later this year for your UI concerns and for bluetooth even. word on the streets is OBEX will not be blocked on all handsets in the near future (see the RAZR v3c right now its no lo...

yes, i am probably too impatient, and i haven't decided to leave just yet, i'm just exploring my options, but i don't think i'd ever go to cingular, i have heard nightmareish things about that company. i have been following the flash based ui threads and the OBEX issue with the RAZR and that kind of stuff really does peak my interest. i'm really just curious about other providers as i have been stuck with CDMA providers and although an inherently inferior technology, GSM does interest me, if not for the ability to use phones not available in the usa, then more for the chance to see why so many people dislike GSM. i guess i'm rambling, but either way i appreciate your input and we'll just have to hope for the best when it comes to the chan...

no problem, T-mobile is a good company if i wasnt with VZW id be with T-moble. you gotta do what you gotta do, i hear you about the UI/bt etc, gl.

Your right, cheyenne has t-mobile service. (and even a new tower shown on compass) T-mobile has roaming agreements in laramie. As far as i have ever seen, they will not disconnect someone for using too many roaming minutes. Could it happen in the future? Who knows. I do know cingular has been known to disconnect people who use too much roaming.
In regards to coverage, im not sure who they roam on in laramie. If you plan on traveling outside of laramie, make sure you get a phone with 850mhz. (most if not all t-mobile phones have that now. Just make sure!)
There is a lot of 850mhz new roaming listed. To see, go to http://compass.t-mobile.com
Put in laramie, wy and zoom out a bit.
Hope that helps..

that definitely helps! thank you very much! i was just in the verizon store today and my friend had his phone broke so we were going to do an esn change on his phone to a new one, but we couldn't access his my account on vzw.com b/c he couldn't receive text messages (his phone wouldn't turn on) so we couldn't get a temp. password for his account...long story short i cannot believe they wouldn't wave the outrageous $20 fee for esn change considering the situation...sorry i just thought i'd express so more anger with verizon, i cannot wait until i have a phone with a SIM...anyway thanks for the help i appreciate it!
...
ouch sorry about that thom i hope your friend didnt pay the 20$ free. customer care does ESN changes for free. 😕
...
nah he didn't, we had to call verizon and get the temp password from them....b/c we explained the situation but they still wouldn't waive it, oh well. its better than alltel though so i shouldn't complain, my dad had alltel and the screwed his bill up so much when they took over cellular one here...needless to say i was definitely glad to have verizon at that point. i'm still a fan...well sort of, i don't hate verizon and i'm sure every other carrier has problems just like that, sorry to complain so much 😛

anytime you need an ESN change just call *611 from the handset or 1-800-922-0204 airtime free if from handet, toll free from a phone, and ESN change is always free.
