8700g vs. MDA...Thoughts/Opinions?

I've been presently doing the research for getting a new phone, one with extras like 'net access, IM, email access, and had narrowed it down to the MDA. I didn't pull the trigger on it yet though because I've read (on this board and other places) of the average/below avg. phone signal/sound quality of it (it's not consistent, but again, that's why we read msgs on the board, yes?).

So, out comes the 8700g.

Does anyone have any information on a comparison between these 2 devices?

Basically, looking for a great phone that can handle PDA "stuff" like the above. The MDA and 8700g are all I've seen so far, so any info'd be greatly appreciated.

Also, to throw another wrench into the discussion, I'm cool with waiting a few months for a...

Hey M -

I've tooled around with both phones and here's my opinions:

Reception:
8700G, Hands Down. No arguments, no if's, and's, or buts. This thing is a powerhouse. 8700g: 1, MDA: 0

Connectivity:
Both have Edge, MDA has Wi-Fi, which is pretty sweet with T-Mobile's HotSpots. Tied up at 1

Software:
Close, but I have to give it to the MDA, there is so much more third party software and OS hacks for the Windows Mobile environment, making the MDA much more customizable. 8700G: 1, MDA: 2

Processor:
8700G generally runs faster due to it having a better processor on a lighter environment, and the MDA has that annoying problem where when you "close" a program it actually just minimizes it until you go into the system manager and r...

only part I disagree with on your post is the software bit. If you are a major chatter then you need the blackberry. It works flawlessly with google talk and msn. The MDA doesn't. It's always disconecting, or not able to connect period.

I will agree that the MDA has more software available, but if it constantly locks up and/or freezes then what good is all the software in the world?

Not to mention the MDA is noticably slower when trying to operate it than the 8700 (which I got and sold my MDA for....)

So I score it 5/1

Those are two programs I did not test out on either device, but thanks for the additional info.

So far, I'm with you guys. I was leaning towards the 8700g, but the MDA still had my eye. With all of the features/capabilites of these phones (technically 'devices' as these do a ton more than just call/receive calls) it's easy to get bogged down by all of the cool stuff that they do.

I guess another question too is pricing...the BB Unlimited Add-on is $19.99 while the T-Mobile Total Internet pkg is $29.99...

And now, RIM goes on to release a newer "mini" (see PS home page). This phone raises an interesting feature question...how "tough" is it to operate a phone's keyboard (like the "mini") vs. a full QWERTY when emailing/messaging?

Thanks for all the responses folks!

I'm personally addicted to the full QWERTY, the SmartType keyboards like one the 7105t just don't cut it for me for the amount of emailing/messaging I do.
