No More Notebook ... Best Phone for EMAIL? Internet?

rtx

May 26, 2006, 3:02 AM
When I travel I have lugged around my 6.5lbs notebook computer much too long now.

I would think with EDGE and the advancement of phone email clients I can find a nice phone to handle my simple email and internet needs especially while on the road.

I need to get a phone where I can read and respond to email ... accessing my POP email accounts.

It also would be nice to be able to visit a few web sites and make a few message board posts using the phone as well.

What phone would you suggest? Any experiences you want to share?

the best phone for what you would like would be the mda or the new blackberry 8700g. Both great phones look at them at tmobile.com. you will get a lot of information about these 🙂 phones.

off hand i'd suggest the htc wizard, or tornado.

but if you dont wanna spend that much loot on the data plan you can do the same stuff by adding opera mini and programming the email client for your email servicer.

the new t-609 is good for that, the pebl is, the razr is, any phone that has an email client.

hope this helps 😁

the pebl has a good email application? i was looking at the pebl seems like a nice phone except for the outside display not being in colour.

the t-mobile rep mentioned the mda or the blackberry ... i didn't think the blackberry could be used to surf web sites, am i wrong?

also, i looked at the mini from opera but not sure why i would need it? a bit confused, obviously 🙂

anyway, to get the right phone i will spend about 300 - 400 if that is needed.

I think the T-mo MDA comes close to what you want. And it's not $300-400. I got for $50 after rebate at Letstalk.com. I've seen at a1wireless.com for free with rebate and a new contract. Hope that helps.

Thanks to all who have replied.
A few people have suggested I wait a couple weeks and pick up the Sidekick III .

Do you guys & ladies feel it will meet my email and Internet needs?

If it were me I'd go with the MDA over the Sidekick, just because of the lack of a proprietary server on the MDA and also for the WiFi--even without a TMo data plan you can do your surfing in any open hot spot anywhere, which is a huge advantage over the Sidekick. Also, there are many more apps available for the MDA out there--it comes with WinBloze Office apps onboard but you can go nuts loading stuff in there--it's a real PDA instead of a medium smart phone. If you're used to a laptop, you'll prefer the MDA. Oh, and it has a touch screen, very nice. Also compact, easy to use and pretty... Check out the feature article on it right here on this web site if you think I'm full of it... 😉

again appreciate everyones insight on this. i am just trying to do my homework by researching as much as possible before i upgrade.

not having ever used much more than a basic phone with a few bells on it i turn to those with the knowledge for suggestions.

in addition i have been reading reviews on the mentioned phones.

i know i have a 14 day free trial on any upgrade, i just don't like to keep changing phones, i don't have a lot of time for that.

anyway, if anyone has any last minute thoughts please add them. i will head over to the tmobile store thursday am.

🙂

the mini from opera allows you to view web pages in html format (just like your home pc to put it simple). you can download it for free to almost any phone at www.opera.com

the black berry does have web surfing capabilities. its just you'll have to add a BB data plan on top of what ever calling plan you pick.

the mda is great also. its SWEEET 🤤 . but dont get something like that unless you need it. same with the blackberry.

buying phones on letstalk.com, wirefly.com, or any other online cellular vendor is just plain scammish. i suggest before you do read their terms and agreements with a fine tooth comb. some lock you in a contract with them AND the carrier. some send unbranded phones (meanind t-mo or any carrier wont cover...

You must work for a store, right? Do you have evidences to prove that on-line vendors are scam?
I am speaking from personal experience dealing with some on-line vendors, so far so good I'll say.
Let the poster of this thread make up his own mind, OK?

I frankly would never suggest the Sidekick to anyone for any reason. The server is always having problems and TMobile has no real control over it since it's mainly serviced by Danger. But if you just gotta have it then go ahead but when you start having a crap load of problems just remember It old you to get the MDA instead.

I've learned a lot from this thread. I do appreciate everyone who took the time to reply.

I had always planned to purchase whatever phone I decide on at a TMO store. I have no specific reason why though.

After reading all the posts here and doing as much research as possible I am going to get the SDA most likely. By the time I get to the store tomorrow evening who knows maybe I'll change my mind 🙂

But it appears to be about all I am looking for. A very close second is the MDA and I am a little on the fence about it. Probably more so due to the bulky size than any other reason.

I like the idea of the Blackberry and wish the newer ones recently approved were available but it doesn't seem as if that will happen soon ☚ī¸
