UMA Launch date?

Anyone have any ideas on when this is going to launch nationwide? I've heard summer, and it's mid June, so let's go already!! 🙂

3rd to 4th quarter is what I read somewhere...as far as NATIONWIDE...

there are mixred reports out there.. a few reports i see that it will be in the first half of 2006.. (which means that in less than 14 or so days they would start rolling it out) but there are also reports saying 2nd half of 2006. no one seems to know but i would say it would be complete this year..

initial devices should be nokia 6136, samsung T709, and MDA/SDA with radio ROM update

ok... eventhough there has been no exact set date since there have been conflicting reports.. i guess when tmobile reports their next earnings they will share..

While my answer isn't going to be very technical (or even possibly the most correct,)

UMA isn't a device, it's a service that would allow a phone to use wifi for calls and data when a gsm signal is not present.

UMA is not a device though, but a feature.

phonescoop says it best so i will use their definition; "(Unlicensed Mobile Access)

Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) provides access to cellular mobile voice and data services over unlicensed spectrum technologies, including Bluetooth and Wi-Fi (802.11).

A UMA phone will use a cellular networks (GSM, CDMA, etc.) when out and about, and automatically switch to a UMA-enabled Bluetooth or Wi-Fi local network when in range, such as at home or in the office.

In local mode, a complete, virtual GSM or CDMA connection is "tunneled" to the carrier via the Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connection and the Internet. This allows seamless, transparent use of all services at all times, includ...
