Text Messages for Voicemail Alert??

I recently became a T-mobile subscriber and have an odd problem. My RAZR V3 and V3i notify me of new voice mails with text messages containing strange symbols (@, *, etc.) I don't get voice mail notification with these phones, only weird text messages. I tried a few different t-mobile SIM cards; all had the same result. Strange thing is the moto's only do this with a T-mobile SIM card inserted. If I use a Cingular SIM card I receive voicemail notification properly in both phones. How do I receive voice mail notification, rather than text messages when I receive a new voice mail? If it helps, both of my RAZR's are factory direct, unbranded (moto software installed), and unlocked. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

PS: T-mobile ...

It has nothing to do with the sim card, or the manufacturer. Your unbranded phones do not have the software T-Mobile uses to decode OTA (Over The Air) update that T-Mo uses to activate and deactivate the Message Waiting icon. When you receive a VM, the VM system sends an OTA to your phone saying, "turn the indicator on." If it doesn't have T-Mo's software, the phone doesn't know what to do with this message, interprets it as a text, and displays it either blank or as a strange message. When you listen to your VM, then the VM system sends an OTA to your phone saying, "Ok, turn the indicator off." Once again, your phone doesn't know how to decode this message, and displays it as an a text. Nothing can be done about it.

Quite the contrary. If you do a seem edit on the Razr/V3 it can be made to use the voicemail waiting indicator. Wihtout the seem edit you'll continue to get the strange SMS when you receive voicemails and when the system attempts to "clear" the indicator. It's a well-known problem with non T-Mobile phones.

Yes, I also receive the garbage text messages when retrieving voicemail. A local dealer in my town would be happy to do a "seem edit" to the V3, however, it is our understanding that there are several, even hundreds of different "seems" on the phone. Can anyone tell me exactly what "seem" needs editing and what exactly needs to be entered or changed in this "seem" to make the voicemail indicator function? Again, thanks to all who have replied and helped with this matter.

I myself purchased an unlocked phone, a Moto SLVR not supported by T-Mobile software and have the same problem. I was told from T-Mobiles tech support there wasn't anything i can do about it. Which sucked. I am trying to find this out as well. Those blank msgs drive me crazy. What i did do was go into my VM and turned on the paging notification, so when i get a msg i get a call from my own number of course, which i have stored in my phonebook as New Voicemail Message. I know this doesn't help, but figured i would share.

The answer to the voicemail notification has been posted at *least* twice. You need to have a seem edit done to enable the voicemail waiting indicator. Otherwise you will...

The following is a link with specific instructions on how do seem edit to enable the voicemail indicator. I did it to my RAZR and have no more text messages. Case closed. 🙂
