Are there any plans for T-Mobile to EVER come to South Carolina? I find it odd that they are everywhere (at least it seems that way) except the Carolinas. Anyone have an idea?

don't worry
T-Mobile will have native 3G service there (a nice amount of 20MHz spectrum), along with 2G roaming with Suncom
...
They have a roaming aggreement there through suncom they have no need to exspand there themselves thy already offer coverage through a partner. 😎
...
I know, but I want to come to Tmo from Sprint and port my #, which they cannot do under a roaming agreement. So they need to have an actual presence here, I guess, to do that.

this is correct. due to lack of domestic coverage in in your area they may not be able to set you up. there is for example hilton head where they can set up. keep in mind that t-mobile pays those roaming charges for the customer and if you lived in roaming using majority or all your minutes in a roaming area it costs them alot of money. so they don't setup service outside of their market.

I, too live in SC. I moved here and brought my t-mobile service with me...I have ha no coverage problems, ut it is a little annoying to always be roaming (no M2M when roaming).
I am just curious why T-Mobile has decided not to have a presence in the Carolinas. is it due to spectrum? population density? saturation?
and the continue to taunt me with national ads...I get to see great deals and new phones (and until recently CZJ)...but no way for folks here to buy...

Its not cause they don't want to have coverage in the Carolinas, its just that, they don't own any spectrum there. They have some spectrum in some cities, but not enough to cover the whole 2 states. They bought spectrum in the AWS auction for the Carolinas, but thats for 3G, and only they know what and how they will use it in the Carolinas. Some think that T-Mobile will buy Suncom, so they could have native coverage, but most have reported that Suncom's network is of poor quality, to the point that T-Mobile would have to do major network work to the Suncom network to make it to T-Mobile's requirements. They might be adding towers there secretly, but no body knows. Only time will tell.

you have to remember that Tmobile is formed by a lot of acquisitions. For example the service they do have in SC which is in the Beaufort Hilton head area was from there purchase of powertel.

Almost certainly what will happen is they will build native 3G towers there at some point and continue to roam off of SunCom for 2G service. Might not happen for a while though, eg until most of the offered handsets are 3G so that most of their customers can use their network instead of paying constant roaming to SunCom.
