Another question for everyone...
When I reactivated with Mextel I overheard the store reps discussing with another customer Nextel may soon be offering broadband style speeds using the phone as a modem. This leads me to a couple of questions.
A) Is this actually on the horizon?
B) Is there a publically released date this may launch?
C) If this gonna cost out the prverbial butt?
jkrivjansky said:Nextel's currently working with Sprint (they're in the process of merging) to offer broadband. I can't say that Nextel will be offering handsets that support these speeds acting as a modem...but it's definitely the direction Nextel's headed seeing as they've partnered...
**DISCLAIMER: I FULLY EXPECT A RESPONSE OF CAN'T SAY. JUST GOTTA ASK**

according to nextel said they that in the 2nd half of this year WIDEN should be fuly on the network as well as there would be devices.
there is no price right now, but i bet it could be around 30-50 bucks per month.
if you are talking broadband style speeds... i belive you are talking about with the merger between sprint/nextel. in 2007-2008 nextel/sprint will be deploying REV A, which will be more then 2.5mb/s with very good latencies. no price is set but i belive it will be better then the 80 dollar price per month that is set by verizon for REV O.

Another customer came in asking if Nextel had in place a way to use your phone as a modem. The store rep said "yes sort of" he stated teh speeds were maybe comparable to a 56k modem and anolog phone line. He further stated that you could likely check email and view web pages but not terribly fast. He ended saying that there was maybe something coming that offered faster speeds I want to say it was in the 3mb/s range. The rep didn't give any technical details becasue I was a "new/returning customer"
I pryed a little more out. He had mentioned something about there being tiers of payment options. If you payed the most expensive rate you were guaranteed bandwidth speeds of X. If you paid ...

Widen will bring speeds up to 80kb/s which will be probably on devices soon, like i mentioned.
flarion which was actually priced per tier level the trial was discontinue, and cant comment on any of that such as nationwide or whatever.
REV A is at 3mb/s and thats probably 2007-2008 time frame.
does that help?
Kinda be funny to play some of the high end games on a Nextel "phone"
but 80kb/s is good for sending pictures and some some basic applications. like messages, pictures, email, IM, internet, etc..
Figuring a way to make my tower accept a pcmcia card without a lot of work or external devices....
