Nextel CEO: iDEN could be part of future public-safety network

Jun 2, 2005 3:43 PM
By Donny Jackson

Nextel President and CEO Tim Donahue yesterday said he believes the company’s iDEN network could be part of the “public-safety network of the future” after it offloads its consumer traffic to Sprint’s CDMA network a few years after the merger of Nextel and Sprint.

Previously, Nextel officials indicated that capital expenditures for the iDEN network would cease in 2007. But Donahue--speaking at the Lehman Brothers Worldwide Wireless and Wireline Conference in New York—indicated that the iDEN network would be part of the merged company’s consumer plans longer than that.

What about the people who want off Nextel's network now? Will they be able to switch or are they going to have to put up with the same crap going on over there at Cingular?

No. They're not going to be able to switch. Sorry, but their wait will be a while.

of course you can leave. you can leave whenever you want. if you dont have a contract just leave, however, if you do pay the ETF then leave to another company that you want to.

unless your talking about going from nextel to sprint without paying the ETF thats not possible.

good find, but that was said a while ago. it makes sense to try to get another revenue stream from the iden network especially since they will try to relieve some capacity (and users) from the nextel network for the public safety people. (Etc..) makes perfect sense for me. they actually mentioned this earlier. ie push to talk centric users etc...

a few things obviously must take place... to see if they will get a roe or roi.. return on equity or return on investment. if they dont then obviously they wont do it, however, if they will they will do it. i think capex matters too becuase thats very important.

we shall see. but to have more revenue streams, like i mentioned earlier, its always a good thing to do. more revenue the better.

Uh, no you didn't. You should really learn to back up your posts with "actual links". LOL. Don't like it when your "link" rule gets thrown back in your face, do you?

Sure looks like it. It won't be long
until Sprint & NEXTEL will have dual-band/iDEN-CDMA phones on the market made by Motorola.

I predict the i930 will be the first one as it has been type accepted for the Part 90 800MHz and 900 MHz spectrum (iDEN) and the 1.9 GHz PCS spectrum (Sprint). 😁

You predict WRONG. There will not be a dual band iden/cdma phone for quite a while. As I posted previously, here is some info you might want to look at regarding the i9xx series.

Well lets see...who am I going to believe, some guys who think they know just because they post on a cell phone website, or the FACTS on the FCC website? Huh, I think I will go with the FCC:

You guys are way to quick to assume that somebody is giving "incorrect" information. I don't give out incorrect information unless I have multiple sources tell me the same thing and I honestly believe the information I'm giving is correct

Well pardon us, but we often read information given by people who thought it was correct. Anyway, I apologized.

I wasn't trying to be rude, and if I came off that way, I apologize too. I just wanted it known that I am not a spreader of false information, at least not on purpose, or without foundation for what I am saying. So either way, just wanted to say that.

It would of been much easier if you post the link first. That way we see the info up close and personal right from the start and there is no cause for confusion. 😉
