Can anyone confirm wether or not nextel charges a fee for porting your number to another carrier? I've gotten different answers from different people. I've heard that they charge 30 bucks or something like that?
I am currently without contract after being with them for over 2 years and looking to switch to cingular.
Thanks for any info.

There is no charge to port your number with any major carrier. I fsomebody told you that they are just trying to get extra money out of you.

Aw.. way to rain on my parade....
Any idea if that still applies even if someone is out of contract?
That so sucks.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. I don't know if it applies to older customers, but I was told by our rep. that it did apply to everyone. Most likely you will receive the charge, because nextel is not going to help someone switch to another company without getting some money from the deal.

That sucks. Another fifty bucks for my wife and I to keep our numbers. Those dirty heathens have gotten enough of my money. Hah. Oh well, guess I'll have to pay it if we want to keep em.
Thanks

Ok.. doing a little more research, I have not found anything on the Nextel website that refers to any charges for porting a number out of nextel other than the dollar something monthly fee that we are all already charged for Nextel to comply with the federally mandated WLNP act. http://nextel.com/en/support/billing/taxes_fe es.shtml#section1
Reading at some other forums I've seen people mentioning something about there being two different companies, Nextel Partners and Nextel Communications. They had mentioned that one had charged a porting fee while the other didn't. I've never been aware of there being two different Nextel companies. Anyone have any details about that?

Nextel Partners handles rural areas... Once the merger is complete, Nextel will buy them...

Nextel partners does charge for porting your number to another carrier. I am not sure about Nextel Communications. The website is with communications, so chances are if it's not on the website you will not be charged for porting your number. Hopefully you guys are with communications so you can get out of that fee!
