Rumor is 1 to 2 years before it hits the market. As to your question to combining the network, the technology path that I have seen is iDEN specifically for PTT and CDMA for the cellular traffic.

Until the dual mode phones are released we won't see any cross-system communications on the PTT side.

Wow that will be interesting. Dual technology phones are tough to pull off unless you can make the handoff between networks smooth. And cell phone companies can't even make the hand off between towers meet the customers expectations. Wow as Nextel18 would say good luck.

was this to me?

right now it is basically iden for push to talk and cdma for voice and for other services like ev-do, however, those ideas may change.

that is the point of doing it though, to see what service is better in that area and that service either nextel or spritn will take over the problem is... if you use iden for voice it will be difficult or impossible to use cdma for data..

When Cingular and AT&T first started upgrading to GSM they introduced GAIT GSM/TDMA dual technology phones. Great idea on paper but put into action the hand off between GSM and TDMA was causing dropped calls. And you have to decide on a dual technology phone which tech is the phone going to look for first. If it looks for CDMA first you got problems if it looks for IDEN first u got problems. I have learned working for Cingular is it is tough maintain two technologies at the same time and create a good customer experience. In many ways the GSM overlay for Cingular has gone very well but from a customer experience it has not gone very well at times. What is Sprint going to do differently?
