I read somewhere that last year NEXTEL upgraded their towers from 3:1 to 6:1. What does this mean? I also was looking at the i860 product page on the Motorola IDEN site and it had IDEN 900 listed as one of the operating frequencies for the i860. I thought IDEN was only 800 mhz?

6:1 provides greater network capacity for the iDEN network.
The iDEN network uses 800 and 900 Mhz.

good questions...

1. the upgrade to 6:1 was only done in key markets that was needed and that allows for more callers to be on a channel. the 3:1 means 3 people on 1, the 6:1 means 6 people on 1. i want you to understand that the upgrade to 6:1 was just on the interconnect side, voice side, not the push to talk becuase the push to talk already has the 6:1 on it.

2. becuase of the consensus plan and other means, nextel has either a. bought out spectrum or b. using spectrum from one of their subsiduaries of the 900mhz band and that is a hope to increase capacity and spectrum. most of the phones they are rolling out now has the 800/900mhz and they have implemented 900mhz on cell sites to allow for more capacity and coverage in an area....
