I am thinking about switching to nextel. What is the service like in the rio rancho area. The coverage map shows it is ok but want to here from people that use it there. Do they use the sprint network now? Can you call other nextel customers in other states for free? Any info would help. Thanks

I don't live in New Mexico, but I can tell you that Sprint and Nextel networks are still separate, so no, you would use the Nextel National Network if you switch to Nextel service. I recommend it - here in northern Ohio anyway, Nextel is awesome, whereas Sprint is terrible (I've used both). This may not be the case where you are, but it's worth a try.

If you subscribe to mobile-to-mobile in your plan ($5 per month), you can call any Sprint or Nextel customer free, unless they are in an affiliate coverage area

I believe the trial period is 14 days, except for in California where it is 30. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that's right. 14 days is plenty of time to see if it works or not.

From looking at Nextel's coverage map for your area, it looks like they will cover you just fine. http://www.nextel.com/cgi-bin/localMarketMap. cgi?zip=87144&x=5&y=5
