Service not carried in my area.
OK I live in a small town. when i type in my area code it says "Nextel National Network does not currently offer services in the area" but from what i understand nextel has no roaming charges so i assume that they are nationwide. Now Verizon is also nationwide and has no roaming charges and my friend who also lives in this small town without any coverage, but she got a phone through them by simply using a zip code from a town that did have coverage. Now is the same possible for Nextel? Could I get a phone and have a long distance number but only pay the $xx.xx charge for the plan I choose? I know the number would be long distance but i really need a cell phone and the local carriers don't have deals like Nextel does.

companies typicly do not want to sign up people who live outside of their area, if they do they pay their roaming partner for every call you make, so it costs more to keep you as a customer. So that is not beneficial to them.

if nextel says they have no service in your area, then it means exactly that. the phone will not work in that area....
...
Yes, that's exactly right. Nextel cannot roam onto any other company's towers because they unique technology and frequencies.

nationwide does not mean 100% coverage even in small towns... no carrier has that.. and Verizon says no roaming on their CDMA network, but they do roam on the old Analog network which covers a lot of "small town" territories. Unfortunately, that would cost you a fortune. I would check your local store or mall to see who appears to provide the most STORE FRONT coverage for the area and purchase from them.

That irritates me so much that Verizon thinks they are perfect. I had them for awhile and their service was terrible in my area, whereas Nextel covers the area like a glove.

While its true Verizon has the largest network, it doesn't mean they have coverage where you are. I dropped VZW because the service was terrible. Switch to Sprint and have had no problems...

Sprint service in my area is non-existent. Where I am at I have Alltel, Nextel, or Verizon, but that's just about it.
