nextel fading?

Is it just me, or has there been very few new releases from nextel? Now i know nextel and sprint merged... but it seems like sprint is launching new phones almost every month, but nextel is not releasing anything? Does this mean maybe nextel and the Iden network are on the way out, or do you think maybe its the "calm before the storm" ... maybe nextel is working on releasing some amazing new technology? Because not only has nextel not realeased a whole lot lately, but what they have released is not very "advanced" compared to what all of the other phone companies have put out there. I'm just wondering what you people who (like me) are obsessed with phone technology.

DISCUSS PLEASE!! 😁

No its not being giving away to the government. Thats just a rumor that was going around, in which Sprint Nextel clarified as a rumor that is not true. Second of all Nextel is releasing two new phones within the next month the i670 on june 19 and the i580 on june 29. Second Nextel was known to not release phones as quickly as other companies for only Motorola makes there phones. Third there also in the process of releasing the dual mode phones, in which there are to start being released by november and eventually making Sprint Nextel one network. Mind i add that this process is to take up to or less then 3 years.

Nothing will happen with iDEN network till well after 2010... As far as handset(s): Motorola is the only manufacturer vs Sprint who has exclusivity with Sanyo, Moto, LG, Nokia, and yada yada. With that, handsets on the Nextel side take a little longer...

Wrong, IDEN is going to the government. Thats right from the Sprint rep. Anyway the change over will be beginning in the fall. First with dual mode phones that will be CDMA voice and IDEN DC. Then, when the next faster revision of EVDO comes out they will be using something called qchat(I think) that will replace IDEN all together. IDEN will be turned over to homeland security and that will be that.

no it isnt, but you are right about the dual mode and the qchat (on the rev a network), but that wont come out in 2008.

the only thing that nextel was thinking about iden was that they would sell mainly to push to talk centric users, and this does not mean they are going to be "given" it away becuase this network generates tons of cash, nextel isnt stupid..

well there were talks earlier that nextel's iden will be sold or will be used for push to talk centric users but ever since the merger there hasnt been any discussion regarding this. perhaps it could be brought up again towards the 2008 and on.. (closer to 2010)

Sprint Nextel Released a document stating that it was not going to turn over the IDEN network to the Government. Sorry Argonnj, your wrong. It was stated as being just a rumor.

it was all a rumor.. the whole point of doing this was to make the network for push to talk centrict users and i guess people didnt understand this simple statement. it doesnt mean nextel is giving it away or selling it, it just means homeland security and others would use nextel (paying the monthly fee with a nice discount) would be push to talk centric users.

I agree, it does sound like something our wonderful government would do. But Nextel can't just dump everyone to CDMA. It's not going to happen. The iDEN network has been very successful and generates a ton of money.

People must realize that Nextel isn’t stupid to “give away” the IDEN network because if with its problems it still generates a lot of cash for the combined company and for Nextel as a separate entity when it existed that way. They are obviously going to be migrating the assets that Nextel has onto the Sprint’s network but that doesn’t mean they are getting rid of Nextel but simply putting over the assets they see that will help increase the position of the combine company. Another thing they could do, which was talked before, was to put the IDEN network use for push to talk centric users but that was it and this idea has died ever since the merger with Sprint.

Actually, they can dump everyone to CDMA if they want to and because of that ...

First of all, we have to get this across to paranoid people:

THE iDEN NETWORK IS NOT BEING GIVEN TO THE GOVERNMENT.

This rumor is false.
Now, for the rest of the story...

The original problem is this: Nextel's frequencies are causing interference with public safety agencies across the country, so the FCC told them they will have to vacate their current frequencies. This sparked the merger with Sprint, since they already have a CDMA network. Now it sounds like they are going to reband the 800 mHz slot, so Nextel will have their own separate portion, and thus, eliminating the interference. The thing is, they will not have as many iDEN frequencies as in the past. They are trading some 800 mHz frequencies for some 1900 mHz CDMA fre...

i have actually heard the same thing about the dual mode. But do you think a phone can handel transmitting and recieving on two networks like that? it makes me think it might be a "battery burner" or something of that sort. i wish more press releases would arise on this issue, because so many nextel customers are in the dark. I migrated from nextel to sprint in the fall because i felt nextel was a company that was losing its technology and its customers... and not to mention its crappy call quality compared to sprint (since majority of the people i used to direct connect thru nextel dropped them and picked up either verizon or sprint, DC becamse useless for me).

nextel doesnt have to vacate all of the frequencies.. they just told them that it would be better to get a differnt part of the spectrum band and make some blocks in between so there wont be any interference.. nextel will have contig spectrum in the 800mhz and 1.9ghz spectrum bands.. ( i dont remember the positions off hand but it is a good size amount)

you must not have heard about qchat huh?

but even when the dual modes still come out they will still serve existing customers and come out with new products and services for those iden users.. the dual mode is a great way to basically take off voice capacity from the nextel's network and it is a great time becuase the re-banding situation is going on now- so they want to make it ea...

I know iDEN isn't going away. Maybe I worded it wrong in my last post. I meant to say that they will give up SOME of their frequencies in exchange for their new 1900 mHz spectrum.

Yes, I have heard of QChat, but I'm just having a hard time telling myself that it will be as instant as iDEN DC. Time will tell for sure I guess.

So do you think they will continue launching Motorola iDEN phones even after the dual-mode's come out? Personally, I don't care about data, as I never use it, so if I will still have the option, I'm going to stay with iDEN. My reason: In my area in particular, Nextel iDEN voice stays rock solid even at zero bars of signal. My former experiences with Verizon and Alltel weren't as good. With both CDMA carriers...

but giving up some freq isnt getting rid of the whole network..

qchat is doing about 1.5 seconds on the set up call. although that isnt close to what nextel's set up time is, it is pretty close and the 2nd best out there. in addition it is over a bigger network with rev a which entices consumers more. remember qchat wont come until 2008ish so there is plenty of time to tweak things.

i think they will launch more iden phones but it will wont be like they do now. (they kind of half too becuase of Boost)

there are few phones that are being released by nextel becuase they are focusing more on the sprint side of things and the dual mode phone that comes out.. after they come out in october and in the first qt of 2007 there is really no sense of coming out with new phones on the iden side... that doesnt mean that iden is going away it just means that they will use it more efficient.
