Hey everyone... I was curious for the people who live on the Island, how do you enjoy your service... Specifically the south shore in Suffolk? I am moving to Babylon Village, South of Montauk and am afraid the only company that actually works is Verizon. Anyone?

I don't live there myself, but according to the coverage map, Nextel has Long Island covered 100%. http://www.nextel.com/cgi-bin/localMarketMap. cgi?market=mkt28 - map. Also, check out http://www.cellreception.com - here you can find where towers are located in the area, as well as read reports from other users in the area.

that's good stuff, thank you very much. my only concern is that sometimes those maps may not be accurate.

Anyone who lives in the area please give me some feedback. I know that south of Montauk, Tmobile doesn't work at all. Verizon I know definitely works, but I am more concerned about Nextel. Thanks again!

There is a trial period. You should use that instead of talking to people on here, because people have different experiences.

Yea, that's a good idea but i would be transferring my number and to switch it back again if i don't like the service... I could just see all the problems and that number is a must to keep.

I might go to Sprint though since I have been hearing how Nextel service has dropped further since the merger/takeover (What ever the hell it is, lol.) Pretty much the same ideas on plans I believe... I'll probably get the Kantana for now, then I'll get the Motorola phone that uses CDMA for data and voice and IDEN for the walkie talkie since I bet it will be considered a Sprint phone.

So go try Sprint and see if it is better. People do not understand that the merger and the degrading in service, if it is, go with each other. It does not! The reason why is because of the consensus plan. If they are putting CDMA infrastructure on IDEN towers and vice versa, which they are, that would only boost signal not degrade.

Ya, the Katana seems to be like a good sleek basic phone then when the dual mode comes in October, people should get it. Again, I wont state if the dual will be for Sprint's legacy or Nextel's legacy.

Coverage on Long Island is not bad at all. I live in Nassau county, and have verizon, cingular, and nextell.when i go to my sisters in East Hampton my nextell works great. You should get the phone and try it where you will be using the service. If it's satisfactory you can port your number after no problem.Service has actually gotten better on my nextell in the last year.

Where did you hear that? My service has gotten better since the merger, and I never had a problem with it before. I live in an area about as rural as it gets, so I'm sure it will work just fine on Long Island. If anything, I've found those coverage maps to be skimpy.
