can anyone tell me
what is the approx. range of a nextel tower
i just had a cust tell me that he gets a perfect signal from his nextel phone while working on an offshore oil rig that is over 100 miles out in the gulf of mexico
is this possible, is there some kinda tower on the rig
...
It depends on the area, but on average about 3 miles. Sometimes it is 1-2 miles, and sometimes it is 3-5 miles.
Yes the possibility is real.

Signal if it has a clear shot can travel many mile across water but I think everyone knows that. I have been in the middle of lake michigan and got great signal, now hundreds of miles away from land I think this guy is exagerating

Could use his phone's Trace mode's GPS location feature to see the lat & lon for the tower/antenna from which he is receiving signal while out on the offshore platform, then use regular GPS location function in the phone's main menu to determine current location of phone, put both lat/lon locations into Google Earth and use Google Earth's measure function to find the actual distance. Works great. Try that on Verizon or Cingular (or even Sprint)!
