Is it worth me even thinking about switching to nextel or should I look else where? Based on reception quality.

if you know a lot of other ppl with nextel then i would consider it because of the ptt. ive had it for years with no problems. the reception is not the greatest, but the ptt almost always works even when i have no signal to make a regular call

Do you feel the voice service has gotten worse since the merger?
...
the voice service getting worse has nothing to do with the merger..and if you sell sprint you should know that. they are two different technologies they dont use the same towers so how would the merger effect it???
...
I read that and was wondering the same thing. How could anyone that sells Sprint not know that
...
Exactly. If the voice service has gotten worse (it hasn't for me), it could be blamed on 800 MHz reconfiguration, in which case we just have to be patient.
I don't even work for Sprint, and I probably never will, since I think Sprint is one of the worst companies out there (not at all referring to the Nextel part of it, but instead to the arrogant Sprint people taking Nextel over), but if I know that...shouldn't he?

I have to say that for me, Nextel's network quality has definitely suffered in the past year. The "digital slurring" problem that plauged here has mostly passed now, but whereas I used to get 3-4 dropped calls per YEAR, I now get 3-4 dropped calls per MONTH.
When friends asked advice on providers, in the past I could legitimately hold Nextel up against Verizon in terms of network quality (not coverage, but quality), but now I can't in good conscience recommend Nextel because of the lousy network performance I've experienced lately. And the Sprint takeover has only made it worse; they spend the resources on media-centric features (songs, TV, etc), not basic phone service.
If the problems with Nextel now are truly all based on re-banding (wh...

It hasn't for me. There is actually a new Nextel tower going up nearby here. They are not just forgetting about iDEN because of the merger. I've had Nextel for over a year now, and, for me anyways, coverage seems to be improving. Of course every area is different, but I've been many places with my Nextel and it always works when I need it to. Voice quality is clear even with zero bars, versus CDMA carriers like Verizon in which call quality deteriorates at two bars or less (my personal experience). Also, Direct Connect works great even when voice doesn't. The only downfall is Nextel's Net service. If you want a phone for a lot of data transfer, find another carrier. But if you're like me and want a phone that makes PHONE CALLS, and ...
