yup. runs on the sprint voice network, and also the nextel network for the direct connect, and it's mil-spec.

The only downside...what if you're in an area with iDEN coverage, and not CDMA? (I have several in my area.) Well, in that case, you can't make any voice calls. Too bad voice can't switch between iDEN and CDMA to whichever is stronger at the time...then it would be true dual-mode. But hey, it's the first one ever, so they have time to work on things like that.

The 210-page user manual is online at this FCC website:

https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/prod/oet/forms/blobs/retri ... »

It seems to have most of the features Nextel users have come to know and love, but after a quick read I noticed two deficits:
1) Three-way calls charge you minutes for both connected calls (I'd. you're burning minutes at 2X normal rate when in a 3-way call). Nextel only dings you for 1X minutes when you initiate a 3-way call. Gee, thanks, Sprint! What a welcome for Nextel users.
2) The Profiles capability seems to be gone now; Nextel's Profiles feature was truly a great and useful feature, but from the user's manual it appears that the Nextel-like Profiles are gone; I hope I'm wron...

Very cool...thanks! Yes, sucks about the 3-way calling, but I guess it makes sense since the calls are on Sprint's network.

The reason you cant make voice calls on iden network is because they are migrating voice and data off the iden network completely, and this is how they are doing it. Search about Sprint 800mhz reconfiguration. FCC bandwidth change will happen in a few years.

eventually the new walkie talkie system will start integratiing into new phones after the 4g network is released. Then iden will be gone completely shortly after that.

he just said the playbook. which is a sprint thing sent out on s.n.c for employees and is considered confidential so you might be careful when you quote your sources because one guy got in trouble by sprint for getting too close to the boundary as far as all that goes

I read somewhere that the reason the dual-mode phone can't make voice calls on both networks is because they are having too much trouble making the billing system charge for both iDEN and CDMA calls from one phone, or something like that. But, it has nothing at all to do with phasing out iDEN. Yes, he is wrong.

The design was actually never meant it for that and one of the problems is what you mentioned but another would be capacity issues.

They are not moving IDEN assets completely off the network- do not be silly and spreading such stupid rumors. The IDEN network though is starting to put some assets over to Sprint’s CDMA network though. During now and the 2008 timeframe we will see more of this situation go on.

You should re-search the ā€œconsensus planā€Ā because Sprint is not getting rid of all of their IDEN spectrum holdings.

Yes...Nextel traded SOME 800 for some 1900. They are not trading ALL of their 800, like these people keep saying...iDEN is NOT going anywhere, folks!!!

In the 'consensus plan', Nextel funds the entire 800 reconfiguration. All this does is takes currently mixed Nextel and public safety frequencies and separates them into opposite ends of the band, thus eliminating the interference and solving the problem. It's not iDEN, in general, that's the problem...it's just the frequencies it is currently on!

Right?

Oct 4, 2006, 10:04 AM
Close enough. šŸ™‚

I wanted to also say that Nextel after the consensus plan is finished they will have a contiguous block in the 800 MHz and then in the 1.9 GHz band.

Therefore, they will be giving 800MHz but also receiving some to form that contiguous block. As you know, a contiguous block can do a lot more than a non- contiguous one.

Yea, that is a good point, but if it doesn’t work then wait till they have the correct dual mode you are looking for. Since they don’t have it and this one wont suit you don’t get it.

I work for Sprint and can tell you, this phone is a great first step for Sprint/Nextel because it combines the most powerful features from both networks. As for coverage, you'll still get reception in an iDen network area, they'll just be treated as a roaming voice call (not to worry, though - Sprint/Nextel's plans include roaming or include an additional option to cover roaming costs). It's already in the pipeline to eventually combine the two networks, it's just taking a lot of time - the upgrades required to produce phones that work on both networks are immense.

Wrong, iden for direct connect only. CDMA for voice and data. No CDMA coverage=no voice coverage.

Not on 1900 MHz. The hybrid phones do not have 800 MHz. iDEN is just as large as CDMA 1900 MHz.

Southwest is wrong, because the hybrid will have 800 MHz IDEN on it.

Southwest is wrong, because the hybrid will have 800 MHz IDEN on it. Voice and data will be on the Sprint’ 1.9 GHz spectrum.

I do not understand after being gone how much information given on here is wrong.

The links I posted yesterday pointing to Motorola's FCC applications for approval for the ic502 clearly show that the phone is intended to use CDMA1900 for cell calls, iDEN for PTT and also Moto-Talk (for off-network Direct Talk, I assume). On page four of the FCC report called "RF EXPOSURE 1", section 3.0 "Device Under Test", it states clearly the following frequency bands:
CDMA: 1851.25-1908.75 MHz (PCS for voice and data only)
iDEN: 806-825 MHz (SMR for PTT dispatch only)
Moto-Talk: 906-928 MHz (off-network Direct Talk only)

Sprint/Nextel has already released it's first hybrid phone they released it on October 1, 2006 However it is olny available in certain markets in the united states and also it is not going for 299.99 with a new 2 yr commiment it is actually being offered for 59.99 with a 2 yr commiment srp is some where between 250.00 and 280.00 sorry I can not remember the what the price is but I'll look in to it later
and as far as the network goes if you know any thing about fiber optics then you know that iden was not compatiable with cdma and that is why they have released a hybrid to limited areas they are putting up towers that support both fiber optics and that is how that phone can use the different networks
