Stay with Alltel...Or switch?

I love Alltel...love love love. I work for Cingular's tech support, and, lets face it, their customer service is horrible. Here's what I love about Alltel:
Customer Service; I could talk to those people all day.
Coverage; absolutely amazing
Phones; I love that alltel (with most phones) will wait for other carriers to have certain phones (ie. V3) so that they can figure out what NOT to order that phone with, or if they should at all.

The problem:
I've been with alltel for almost 5 years and I've come to realize that, even though their phones have all the bugs worked out by the time they start selling them, there aren't really a lot of phones to choose from on a constant basis. I'm wanting a Data Device right now and I'm upgrade eligible, but my contract isn't up until december 2007. should I upgrade with alltel and not get a data device (since there aren't really any good ones) and possibly be dissatisfied with my phone for 2 more years cuz it doesn't have the features I want/need....Or just switch carriers and get the phone I really want?

I'm not quite sure what you mean by not having data devices. They have the Q, nice blackberry's. A huge EVDO high speed network......by the way, a lot better then cingular's right now. I'm not sure what kind of data problems you are talking about, could you be more specific?

No....I know alltel has data devices, but I'm really not particular about MOTO's (afraid to get one). I really don't like blackberrys....the only one I do like is the Pearl (alltel doesnt have it) and I don't like the way Palm's are set up. The only other one I was thinking about was that Starcomm or whatever...but I don't think I could handle a phone that bulky. Oh...and anything is better than Cingular. lol I would never switch to them. 😉

Usually Moto's are high quality. But there are some bad phones. I would try to go into a store and take a look at the Q, very nice pda phone. The only knock is no touch screen.

But yeah i think Cingular is the only company with Pearl right now. I've heard good things about it. Alltel may be getting the utstarcom 6800, which is supposed to be good. But I don't know when exactly. The treo 700 comes with either a palm operating system or windows mobile also. But other then that. If you don't like black berrys and the 6700 is too bulky I guess there isn't much else besides the Q.....

Well...that's exactly my problem. I love alltel but need/want a data device and the only thing worth THINKING about right now is the Q. I don't trust MOTOs...i never have. they all have display and keypad problems, most all end up with frequent dropped calls/loss of network, and the battery life is terrible.

Should I just take a chance since I know alltel is better with backing up their phones and everything...or just switch carriers (as much as I would hate to).

Basically...great customer service/support and network vs. more up-to-date phones and a wider variety (not sure of customer service depending on whom i'd switch to)

I think that you should wait until Alltel sends you a letter telling you are ready for an upgrade which will be 3 months before your contract is up. Alltel is suppose to be getting some new smartphones in the middle and latter part of the year. The Pearl is coming soon, the 6800 is a thinner version of the 6700, also there is speculation that alltel may be getting the HTC P4000 which is a CDMA version of the Hermes also known as the Cingular 8525

ok sukular was never the only carrier with the pearl. Tmobile launched the pearl first. they had it for about 3 or 4 months before sukular ever got it. now sukular, tmobile, cell one, and verizon and sprint get it on may 7th. as far as altell pda's i have no clue i just thought it was dumb that someone suggested the sukular was the only one with the pearl.

Didn't Alltel carry Apache's? It was an HTC product. That might be a compromise. Get one on ebay or something and use it.

I won't get a phone from ebay or anything like. they're not covered under warranty and in terms like that, it's a bitch to try to exchange if it ever needs to be. I work for Cingular's warranty...so i know how all that works and I hate having to tell customers they're **** outta luck cuz they got a phone from ebay. 😕

Well, of course it isn't covered by warranty, but most sellers tell you that from the beginning. If the price is reasonable, and you feel like you can trust the seller, give it a try. That Apache was one slick phone. I have a friend that has one. He gets wifi, and Alltel's data and can make that thing do back flips.
