Alltel Launches Franklin CDU550 USB Data Card
On Thursday, April 5, 2007, Alltel will launch the Franklin CDU550 USB data card.
A $50.00 mail-in rebate will be available for customers with a two-year service agreement.
Features of the Franklin CDU550 include:
USB Type A connection - fits standard USB ports on laptops and desktop PCs
Hinged Antenna Rx Diversity - internal and external antenna to support better coverage
Windows 2000 and XP support
I'm not sure about you guys, but I've been waiting for a USB data card for a couple of months now. I would imagine that a patch for Vista is around the corner, or will be ready by launch tomorrow.
Sprint and Verizon already have a USB type device on the REV A network.
It seems to me that Alltel picks some horrible devices for data cards for some unknown reasons. I have heard some negative things about Franklin devices, especially the CDU 550.
After playing around with this thing for a bit, it seems ok. I haven't had any major issues that I didn't have with a standard 802.11 set up. It did seem a little slow to connect, but once connected it was rather fast to load pages, and more importantly, flash sites loaded rather quickly.
That is the problem where it just performs ok and not the best especially when you compare it to Sierra Wireless and Novatel Wireless.
