Coverage Map and Roaming in South Texas

My son recently moved to South Texas, between Laredo and Corpus. He has the Alltel National Freedom Plan. When looking at his coverage map it shows that all of Texas south of San Antonio is covered in the plan. His first bill shows he is roaming. Why does Alltel publish a map that shows the area within the plan and then charge roaming? Anyone know of any class action suits concerning this? I understand they may not cover every area, but why do they continue to publish a map that is misleading?

No suits, because alltel's coverage varies. None of the carriers maps are really that accurate despite there claims. Have you called alltel to try and get them removed? If he was on, Verizon, Sprint, or USCC and some smaller ones it would have been free. But most likely he was off the beaten path and only got signal from a local-yocal carrier. One area that is a known problem with being a major area and roaming for alltel is Dallas. Some area downtown i guess don't have a free roam coverage partner. Ultimately, it's not that hard to look and see if you are paid roaming or free roaming. Try calling them and seeing if they will remove them. Explain according to the map your have coverage, maybe they will be nice about it. Don't be rude, otherw...

sorry i did not mean "alltel's coverage varies". I mean the coverage maps are based on info that is given to alltel by the other carriers regarding their coverage. So actual coverage varies and Alltel can only rely on what these other carriers are telling them about the coverage.....

This is stated under the map of the National Freedom plan "Map Information
Maps are a general representation of coverage. They are for illustrative purposes only. Wireless service is subject to limitations and may vary based on system availability and capacity, customer equipment, terrain, signal strength, buildings, weather and other conditions. Service outside the Alltel network, although depicted on our maps, is based on information from other carriers or publicly available information, and we cannot guarantee its accuracy. Alltel does not guarantee coverage or service availability"

Im not sure how much clearer we can make it that you can still get roaming on the National Freedom plan. On this plan you HAVE to watch your roaming indi...

Then why does Alltel not change the coverage map for Texas? I checked the regional coverage map for a phone that would be purchased in Brownsville Texas and it shows the whole state of Texas is non-roaming. My son cannot be the first person to incur roaming charges in Jim Hogg county, yet they still show the county as part of both National
freedom plan and the local calling area for a phone bought in Brownsville. This is false advertising!!!

A given city can have multiple carriers towers. Or as you may call it antennas. For the National Freedom plan Alltel has roaming agreements with two other carriers. In your Hog Head county texas we probably have roaming agreements with a carrier. If your phone picks up that carriers tower your fine, if it uses a tower we dont have a roaming agreement with thats when you get your roaming charges. You ALWAYS know if your roaming or not by watching your roaming indicator when its flashing or not there your fine no roaming charges. But if its holding solid then you dont want to use your phone...If thats too hard you can go to T-Mobile where you dont even have an option to roam.
