From my understanding, you can buy the Chocolates (unlocked) on a certain website. I'll try and find the site, it was on a business magazine. Since Alltel and VZW use the same platform (BREW), they should be compatable.

Plus, I've read in past threads (phonescoop), Alltel did allow a VZW phone on their network. Don't know if it was re-flashed, and installed a new Alltel PRL.

To my knowledge, Verizon has the exclusive rights to the Chocolate. So that phone only has the Verizon UI, where Verizon only had limited exclusive rights to the LG VX8600, which later came to Alltel as the AX8600, and has a different UI from the VX8600.

Do understand. When the phone is re-flashed, and forced to a network, it doesn't matter who has an exclusive. I've seen a Sanyo phone on VZW's and cricKet's network. Sanyo is an exclusive to Sprint's network (MVNO's included).

The only carrier that I know, that doesn't allow other, outside carrier's ESN's to their network, is Sprint.

I'll find the site and post it. 😉

It may take me a while to find the site, but I'll explain on what re-flashing allows you to do.

You can get software that will allow you to "re-flash" a CDMA phone. This will re-set the MSL (Master Sub Lock) to 0's (normally). Force the PRL to the network, re-program the phone with the proper numbers, and there you have it....a re-flashed phone working on a different network.

If the platform is different, most likely you only going to have voice services, not data, and possibly text.

Most 3rd party companies will re-flash a phone. cricKet does this all the time in my area, and other local carriers.

You can use it, even without flashing. But if you do not flash it only the voice and sms will work, Maybe the wap if you work on it.

But you would have to flash it with a compatible alltel firmware to use other network features like mms. You can sometimes have a hard time getting a prl on the phone the normal way when it is not flashed. So you would download it into the phone from your computer.

Well SMS is basic texting, so you most likely will be able to do that. But pic/vid(mms) will likely not work, or enhanced messages with pictures usually.

I don't know many alltel corporate stores that will flash the phone. Because it has the chance to "brick it" or kill it rather. So you are taking a risk. You can try an authorized dealer with a flashing station but not all have them. You can also do it yourself. You have to get a program like pskcommander or p.s.t. and then find a monster flash file online (not as hard as it sounds, there is a website that has all the latest firmwares because people like to escape verizon's crappy UI). But the chocolate might lose some functionality if you flash it, you never know. You would need the 860...
