Unlocked CDMA phones?
I was looking at the internet an came across a new Nokia phone that was unlocked and had CDMA, which I believe is what Alltel uses. Can I use an unlocked phone, or do I have to stick with the Alltel phones? If I have to stick with the Alltel phones when are some of the new phones coming out?

There is no such thing as an unlocked CDMA phone. They are carrier specific. They are very few exceptions to this. But verizon sprint alltel will 99% of the time not activate any phone not in their esn database.

I didnt really think it would work, but I thought I would atleast ask. The phone I was looking at on EBAY said "BRAND NEW NOKIA N95 UNLOCKED WORLD PHONE GSM CDMA" So I thought it was probably an unlocked CDMA which means it may work for Alltel. But I wonder even if it did work would Alltel even let you use a phone that isnt theirs?

chances are it is not CDMA. They do that so when you search for a phone that comes out and they hope you are not tech savy enough to know its really not a cdma phone. It is false advertising to get more hits on the phone. I think it shouldn't be allowed.
And there are so many things that would go wrong or may not work. Voice calls are basic. but when it comes to MMS and data if it is not programed right with the right software it won't work. That even goes for GSM phones. You can put your sim in any phone and make voice calls but I believe for data you have more to do to it.

thats kind of what I thought, but I thought it was just worth asking. I believe that particular phone their is two models, one GSM and one CDMA.

Actually looking at that particular phone I noticed it is a WCDMA / GSM, and not a CDMA so that phone would NOT work with Alltel. Thanks for all the help, I am probably going to wait for the Razr 2, do you have any idea on a possible release date for it?

I figured it wasnt CDMA. Umm I think I heard September but not to sure on it. Me and my wife go thte 8600 and it works great. best reception out of all their phones. I do not like moto so I would not buy the razr2. They have allot of issues more so on the CDMA side! But to each their own.
