A bigger and better merger soon...with VZW?

Check out this article about that Alltel and Verizon Wireless may, just may, be in merger talks http://www.engadget.com/entry/123400019004515 3 This same rumor has surfaced before, but not after Cingular became the #1 carrier in terms of customers. Alltel's customer base would give Verizon Wireless enough customers to either tie or give VZW a lead of 1 to 3 million...much closer than they are now to becoming #1 again.

This seems at least a possility. In my area, a market for Alltel and not Verizon, there have been many new antennas added to existing cell towers, and when asking the people adding the antennas who the provider would be, they had told me "Verizon" and the same answer was given after contacting the company operating the site...

Well,

If Verizon is adding towers or antenna, it isn't because of the merger. If indeed they are adding antenna it is because they already own spectrum in the area.

Also, Verizon would not get all those customers. The FCC would require significant divesting of markets.

Actually, there wouldn't be a large divestiture for this to happen. These companies compete is just 3% of their coverage maps, and even then, it might not be enough spectrum to cause any problems with the FCC.

Probably won't happen any time soon though. VZW would wait until the ATTWS properties have settled down (that'll take 8 months...) and then they would wait for the dust to settle after the Western Wireless purchase.

The directive comes from the FCC. If you read the merger info from the FCC regarding the Cingular/ATTWS deal it is from the FCC based on recommendations by the DOJ.

The FCC is the regulatory body.

Scott Ford is too adamant to allow the buyout. Also Alltel is too big for the FCC to allow it to happen and also Alltel is more profitable than verizon right now so I do not think
Verizon is liquid enough financially to swing it. Just my 2 cents

you said it best, alltel is just to big of a company for the fcc to let verizon just buy them. Isnt it funny how Verizon thinks its too much money to sponcer a nascar driver but alltel has one...hmmmm

I never heard of the Verizon won't sponsor nascar I heard that cingular and Alltel where the only two to get in before Nextel bought out the naming rights. Hey people love ryan newman in Florida and they always come into the store talking about him. Nascar is great advertising along with the stadium in Jacksonville and the arena in little Rock. Go Alltel and AlltelUSERS

I cannot name my source, but I've heard inside rumors that Alltel had in mind to purchase U.S. Cellular. They have already transitioned some markets in Florida to Alltel. Just keep a heads-up.

I would'nt mind Alltel+USCC....I am a USCC customer we could have the best of both worlds. Alltel's national plans because USCC's sucks and USCC's quality coverage because Alltel's is crap.

Alltel has one of the best cash flows in the Industry so it would be possible. I do not think uscc will sell and possibly the fcc would mandate many divestitures. I like the Idea because that would make Alltel's native coverage map a lot larger and I know Alltel has a good network and I do not know much about Uscc's but I have not heard much negative about it. It would be good for Alltel and as a stock holder I would love it.
