analog service?

cingular recently announced that they are diligently waiting to shut down their analog and TDMA systems in 2008. That's fine for cingular, because A: their customers are used to not having service in a lot of places and B: none of their phones are dual-mode. The FCC will no longer require carriers to support analog as of March 1, 2008. Digital coverage is pretty good here in Ohio, but I still hit analog sometimes on those dark, lonesome highways. What will Alltel do? 2 years isn't a lot of time to stand up to north america's analog network. i'm sure verizon is eager to throw the switch...

Alltel claims to be 100% digital already so I guess we will see what change we really see when it is all said and done.

I'm not sure what these carriers are going to do. I do know what Sprint will be doing. Nothing. Sprint operates an all Digital CDMA & IDEN networks with no analog services. Sprint is lanching many new CDMA - IDEN mode phones to cover the areas where other carriers have chosen not to spent money on building towers, but rather spent money on renting analog service.
