Not heard that rumor but they did just make another purchase in virginia. Looks like they purchased Virginia cellular and liscences to Virginia Cellular PCS.

I would be extremely surprised at NTelos. NTelos is a 1900mhz (PCS) company and Alltel is not very happy with the current PCS markets they operate. In addition, NTelos has an exclusive contract with Sprint Nextel Corp.

Is Jacksonville Alltel's main 1900 band? I know they do not really like Jacksonville and from what I heard that might be the one chink in the network armor.

I don't know if Jacksonville is their main 1900mhz market. But if Alltel isn't all that happy with the PCS band, then why are they acquiring carriers that use the PCS band? Sprint & Verizon would like to have that spectrum. I don't know if US Cellular is wanting to operate more in the PCS band. I understand that the cellular band travels further than the PCS band does, which would be why some carriers prefer the cellular band over the PCS band. Sprint only favors PCS, Verizon will get their hands on whatever is available, and US Cellular seems to use mostly cellular, though they've been getting more PCS licenses. If Alltel wants to try and enter some major markets, then they need to accept some PCS spectrum in their coverage.

Alltel purchased the US Cellular market in SFL and it was TDMA, which is waaaaay worse than PCS. It's all about convergence. It is set for January 1, 2007 for all TDMA service on ALltel's Treasure Coast, FL market to be switched off. Alltel pushes convergence throughout the US. Western Wireless will take a bit more time.

The US Cellular market in that area is 800-850 MHz not 1900 MHz. Whether or not US Cellular built a good network is not the issue. Alltel changed out the TDMA for CDMA channels in the former US Cellular markets (I’m surprised US Cellular had not converted that market to CDMA). In addition, Alltel purchased that area because they believed the DoJ was going to require Cingular to divest the eastern coast of FL. As we all know, DoJ stated that enough competition was available for customers. Therefore, Cingular was allowed to keep the AT&T spectrum. Alltel was extremely excited about selling the PCS market in Jacksonville, FL where they are underperforming (If they got the AT&T spectrum). Jacksonville, FL market is about 50 towers short and sti...

Yes, Alltel has PCS licenses but the amount is low number. The smaller carriers that Alltel has been acquiring have limit number of PCS licenses (1 to 3). The purchasing point with Alltel is that spectrum is in the 800-850 MHz range, location, and price.
Alltel is not concerned with penetrating into the tier 1 market (Hence the name AT Rural Wireless). Alltel wants to be the largest rural wireless company and they are not concerned with being number 1 in customer count.
Alltel wants quality revenue from customers and roaming.
