This has been bugging me for some time...
I see listings on ebay or hear of people buying phones that are unlocked and can be used on any carrier. I am really curious how this can be. Alltel-cdma, Cingular-GSM, etc. If I purchased a Cingular phone how can it be used on alltel. I have tried to tell people it cant because of the technology. I keep getting told I am full of crap. I would appreciate any clarification on this.

gsm phones can be unlocked. they can be used on other gsm carriers that use the same frequency. for example, a t-mobile phone could be used on cingular if it's unlocked. it would not work on a cdma carrier.
