Alltel merging with US Cellular

RUMOR MILL......Here's how I heard it. A report supposedly came out giving USCC a value of 1.8 billion dollars. Alltel has more than that in liquid assets, SO...... rumors begin. I don't dee it happening UNLESS Alltel AND Verizon were to go together and purchase it and split it up since Alltel and USCC has a lot of overlaps in coverage. Why purchase what you already own? Why invite Verizon to come in and compete head to head? Now if VERIZON and ALLTEL were to merge AND buy USCC at the same time....... Verizon would regain it's former #1 largest carrier ranking it lost with the Cingular/ATT deal.

I agree. I think there are plenty of markets that ALLTEL would like to get in that Purchase, not merger, but there are also others that would result in them being the ONLY carrier, and I doubt the FCC would allow that. A company like Midwest Wireless would be better for ALLTEL, no overlapping markets, and an extremely strong network for a smaller carrier. And would make them the Midwest powerhouse. Although, MW is still privately owned, so it may take quite a bit for them to give that up. There's my nickels worth.

Alltel already bought Midwest Wireless, they bought Western Wireless just before so it didn't get much attention......

im glad im not the only one who heard this!! I dont think Verizon is going to go quietly once this Cingular/Att deal goes through

Also Verizon has a butt load(technical term) of roaming agreements with alltel in the Midwest...if there we a merger and those towers became VZW owned...imagine the better coverage even just in northern Michigan...it would be crazy!

the only thing is alltel CLAIMS to be profitable so i don't think they're ready to let verizon take over. They have been really quiet lately so they could have something up there sleeve. That midwest thing might be the ticket. They need to step it up somewhere

I wish Alltel would become larger and more competitive once the AT&T/Cingular merger happens. I agree that there may be a merger but as to who that carrier may be is a question, but in my opinion it would eventually be Verizon. In my area, there is only Alltel and AT&T, so Alltel would stand a very small chance of competing with the #1 carrier...something has to happen for the sake of better products and services for Alltel.

It would be smart to merge with verizon but Alltel seems to be going a different way than verizon. Looking at the verizon's corporate structure would imply that all of alltel's major players would become really nobodies(ceo to retail store manager isn't that good of a move. Theres like nobody from primco in power, 2 or 3 guys from airtouch and everybody else is bell atlantic (verizon is an easy way to say bell atlantic mobile if you didn't know). Alltel has little money i say buy merge with someone else see how it goes and if have to merge with verizon you'll be worth that much more.

They really need to merge b/c verizon has the best service and they together would have a bigger network than cingular that now has 51 million customers and growing every day, and if verizon merges with alltel they would be over 71 million customers and therefore verizon would take the lead in network customers... 🙂
