I am currently with Sprint and have a Pocket PC PDA/smartphone. I am thinking about switching to Alltel for better coverage. Can anyone tell me how their experience has been with Alltel's smartphones? How is the data speeds?

I am thinking about the ppc 6700 because I like pocket pc's but would like to hear anyones experiences.

Thanks!

The data speeds depends on where you are. Currently Alltel doesn't have the same number of EVDO markets as Sprint does. However, they did sign a data roaming agreement with Sprint, which will allow Alltel customers to use Sprints EVDO and Alltel's EVDO for free, this should be into affect by october/november or so. You should have 1xrtt where ever you are (60-144 kbps). EVDO is 700 kbps to 2.4 mbps. What city are you located? I can tell if you will notice a drop off or increase in speed where you are...

Alltel is expected to get the Motorola Q by Christmas I believe, if you want to wait that long, or get a cheap one off eBay and use it until the Q arrives. Unless you like the 6700 better.

Thanks for your reply. I am in Wilminton, NC.

I have a ppc 6600 with sprint now and I like the Pocket PC phones. Was thinking about the Moto Q but not sure if I could do without the touch pad.

Was curious if there might be more pocket pc phones coming from Alltel soon that might be worth waiting for.

I have not used the 6700 myself.

Thanks!

Ok, looks like EVDO isn't in your area for either carrier. But it is available in Raleigh-Durham area and Charlotte area in many more places then Sprint EVDO is. In Fayetteville you will get Sprint's EVDO.

You will have very good coverage with Alltel in Wilmington. The 6700 is pretty good, it can be tricky getting it to work with your home Wifi sometimes. But it's a really good smartphone.

Thank you for all your information. Very helpful.

Who's EVDO network were you finding in Raleigh-Durham and Charlotte? You made it sound like it was not Sprint. Verizon then? That would not do me any good as a Alltel user would it?

Again, thank you for your insite!

This info is fresh off Alltel's internal news system (Portal aka Einstein), thought it might be useful:

On Monday, August 7, 2006, Alltel will expand its Axcess Broadband (ABB) and Wireless Data coverage area in Raleigh, NC.

ABB provides Customers with access to e-mail, the Internet, and data applications at increased speeds of 400-700 Kbps and burst up to 2.4 Mbps. The UTStarcomm 5740 data card is $99.99 with a two-year contract, and provides laptop to access the Internet. Data kits will be priced at $69.99 and provide connectivity between the handset to be used as a wireless modem for the laptop and perform phonebook transfers.

Actually Alltel already has there own EVDO network there. I know it doesn't really help you, but I was just giving you the closest markets with it. Data speeds on a whole should be the same or better with Alltel, with a larger coverage area.
