Does anyone know why Alltel Wireless has roaming charges on their National Freedom network? It's been years since I've heard of a North American wireless carrier that didn't have some sort of plan that was inclusive of roaming charges regardless of where a customer travelled with their handset. According to the Alltel Wireless website, the roaming charge per minute on the National Freedom service plans is $0.50/minute plus $0.40/minute for any applicable domestic long distance charges. I wonder if a buyout is in their near future.

Alltel's too big to worry about being bought out at this point. Like USCC, they will get a true nationwide plan when their old one starts costing them too many customers. If you like regional carriers and you are in a USCC area, try that one, or another company. If enough of you express your displeasure in a monetary way, Alltel will change their plans.

If you notice, Verizon also roams in Kentucky...the only major area that I'm aware of where Alltel roams.
...
I think Alltel Wireless still has roaming charges in certain areas of the country because they're not able to to negotiate a fair market value with the particular wireless carriers in those areas.
...
Yes that is true.... The main one is Appalachian Wireless, who doesn't play nice with any carrier, they don't even treat their customers well.
...
The reason there are possible roaming charges is because the National Freedom plan is network based. Theoretically you can incur a roaming fee in certain locations. Be sure you are not making calls if you have a solid roaming indicator on your phone.
...
Alltel does have a completely roaming free National rate plan category....
ITS CALLED TOTAL FREEDOM
with no roaming or long-distance charges, if you like the amount of minutes you get, pick it, cochese.
...
Where can you find information on Total Freedom as I can't find anytthing pertaining to it on the www.alltel.com site?
...
You have to call in. They don't make enough money off it to advertise. I believe the cheapest total freedom plan was something like 350 anytime minutes, 1000 n/w, 100 m2m. It is no roaming anywhere you have service.
Most areas do not need this. Their national freedom coverage area is very good. Free roaming with vzw, sprint, now bluegrass cellular with the new prl, thumb cellular, USCC...
