I noticed the U520 supports EVDO, but does Alltel even have EVDO built out? Or do they roam off Sprint and Verizon?

Yes they do. Even here in havelock NC they are the only ones that do. Neither verizon or sprint don't have it. They have extensive evdo REV 0

The trade agreements between Verizon, Alltel, and recently Sprint, have added an extensive broadband coverage range to Alltel.

80 percent or so of Alltel's network is EVDO. They are working on making it all EVDO and will eventually upgrade it to rev A. They also roam off Sprint's EVDO. They have had EVDO for a long time now.

80%...???!!! NO WAY, dude. Take a look at a 1x data network map. I doubt EV-DO covers even 40% of its markets...

I know it's not exact. But it will be 80 percent or more soon. I think the 53 percent remark somewhere in these posts is more accurate as of right now.

As someposts are mentioning that EVDO is being being built out, it depends on where you're located at. Since most of Alltel's network is cellular, it's released in the cellular band. Where Verizon has PCS licenses, they release EVDO in the PCS band only. Wichita Kansas is the only Verizon market released EVDO in the cellular band.
As for being able to use EVDO, you need to have a data plan, or using EVDO will result in being charged by the kilobyte. I don't know what restrictions Alltel has with their EVDO, but Verizon is planning to eliminate their unlimited plan. As f...

Keep in mind the map has NOT been updated. To reflect current operating EVDO markets. Several markets (besides the one's listed) have already launched EVDO since this map was created. The map shows 1X and EVDO.

Reminder: This map is not current but it gives you an idea of what has been done. More markets will launch throughout 07. Look at the corporate releases for the markets just launched in EVDO.

Keep in mind that EVDO roaming at the moment only appllies to the Sprint network. I don't know if Alltel is going to sign any EVDO roaming agreements with USCC or not. But don't expect Alltel to sign any with Verizon Wireless. Verizon Wireless hardly allows their own users to data roam on other networks, and when they do, it's mainly for 1X.

Alltel also has a great deal for EVDO Phone as Modem. Its only on the KRZR, RAZR, E-815 and Samsung U-520, but you can add Phone as Modem for only $25 bucks. Ulimited. Not a bad deal compared to everyone else.
Cheers.
