Use Blackberry as JUST a phone?????

I'm a cheapskate.... and would like to get a blackberry for my cell phone and have the calendar features(sync'd with my computer) instead of carrying a second pda around.
However all the extra 'blackberry' charges seem outrageous. You need a phone plan - plus a blackberry plan??!!
Can't someone just use the blackberry as a phone and the rest of it as a pda? I don't need wireless email. However I hear the perl has wireless (which I assume if you are in a hotspot you can surf the internet using the perl?)
Anyone know of any carriers or plans allowing you to use the pda as a phone with out all the extra charges?
Thanks!

Wrong forum buddy. 😛
...
You're right, but there's no RIM forum.
...
Sorry. I never pay attention to RIM's phones.
...
no pearl that has wifi, unless the new flip one has some hidden features
...
I know tmobile and at&t offer that option. Don't know about other carriers.
...
Don't you need wi-fi on your phone to do that?
...
Wifi has nothing to do this thread..... 😕 🤣 🤣 Read the title...... 🤣 🤣 🤣

Ummm, why don't you re-read the original post! 😡 😛

the blackberry plan is not only for emailing, its providing you with wireless internet as well, I wouldnt trust the wi-fi hot spot, some of them are slow, some you have to pay a fee, and they are not SECURE. If the 29.99 internet plan for the blackberry is too much for you, then go for a palm treo without a PDA plan and use it as phone along with capabilites, except for going on the internet. If not a treo, then try another PDA device.

He can use any smart phone without a data plan it doesn't have to be a palm treo.

I know AT&T gives you the option of purchasing a PDA/Smartphone without the unlimited data package. I've been using a smartphone with them for almost a year and I have not had a data plan on my smartphone. But i'm pretty sure that you have to have some type of data on your line to be eliible to get the mail in rebate on any of thier PDA/Smartphones such as the unlimited data or unlimited messaging.
As far as wifi goes, the pearl does not have that capability, but the Curve does and so will the Blackberry Bold, also the AT&T Tilt and the Palm Treo Pro. I'm not sure if the new flip style Pearl will have that or not.
