L6 Display Option

I just moved from a life of Nokia phones to the Motorola L6. I was wondering, does the display of all candy bar-type Motorola phones shut off after the phone is not in use after just a few seconds? (I assume it's a power-saving feature.)

According to my manual, I can turn the "Display Timeout" to OFF, which I did, but I'm still getting the same result, ie: screen shuts completely off when I don't press any key for just a few seconds. With my previous Nokias, the screen would just go dim, but you can still see the screen and then later, the screensaver would come on, which is just a dim clock.

When I'm not using the phone, I would still like to see the screen, eg: to see if I have a message, check the time, etc. Is the screen shut...
