Emailing ringtones (Verizon)

I have the Motorola v325 and my son has the Motorola e815. It seems totally random whether or not I can email ringtones to the v325 - doesn't seem to correspond to whether or not the file is a MIDI, mp3, or anything else, or even how long the clip is! And I haven't been able to email any of them to my son's phone. Any suggestions?
