Actually they didn't pass a law saying that phones have to be un-lockable.. They said it is now legal to unlock them.

The result of this exemption is good news for cellular users. No longer will users be faced with an unpleasant choice of either (1) violating the DMCA or (2) having to buy a new phone.

Now, users can legally unlock their cellular phones. Unlocking a cell phone allows a consumer to keep their current phone while changing service providers. I do not have an iPhone, because I do not want ATT service. I have been an Apple fan my whole life, and drooled today when I got to hold one, but it's not enough to sacrifice service (at least where I live). It will never work on Verizon. At least not until there is a CDMA version of it and that one wouldn't work on ATT. Unlocking is only pertinent if you want to change carries within the same protocol.

ATT owns the rights to the iPhone, and signed and exculsive contract to stay w/ ATT for at least the two years. Who's to say that it isn't ATT comply-ing with Apple's rules?

The temporary revision to the ruling does not say that providers have to unlock their devices. It states that YOU can not get fined for unlocking your own device and use it with another provider, assuming they use the same technology. (i.e.-GSM CDMA)
